Many people will not read this press release that have instagram. They will not delete their accounts. Next thing you know you are driving downtown and you see a picture of your child on a billboard, photo shopped, in an ad to sell some product.

Default i am now glad instagram is not on BB

This was all over the net yesterday with people deleting accounts proclaiming "there are plenty other filter apps out there,I think its time to dump instagram" they must be high thinking people wouldn't mind? I sure as heck will not be using instagram at all anymore. Facebook killed it IMO.

That happened to a friend of mine. A photo posted on Flickr. Someone right clicked it and used it.

Another friend had a pic of her Andalusian stallion posted on a stud breeder's website. Back in 2008.

A friend had her baby's pic used in Argentina on a clothing advert.

A model's picture was used as an advert for an escort service.

None of these instances involved Instagram.

It would be slightly less bad if there was an opt in/opt out of the "make available for commercial purposes'', and if they did that along with a share of the proceeds then perhaps people would be more inclined to put up with it. Who knows,if they made it 70% photographer, 30% Instagram, people might even like it as that is the same split programmers get as the creative part of selling apps.

    lets see.
no intragram for Blackberry. And even though flickr has launched a new mobile app, they don't support Blackberry. My audible mobile app doesn't work on BB7 nor does Foodspotting amongst other popular apps. Soon no Whatsapp?- which i use to talk to all my friends who have dumped their Blackberrys this year. I'm finding it very hard to think about switching to BB10 when there still seems to be little developer app support. I think unless they get some serious developer support, BB10 or not, it's the end coming. And this is coming from me, who has been waving the pro blackberry flag in any situation i can for years. i'm starting not to believe anymore ;-(

I have a feeling a lot of people in this thread haven't actually used Instagram.

Firstly, Kevin M (via RIM) has all but confirmed that Instagram will be on BB10. Not concerned about that.

You shouldn't hate on Instagram because you are a productivity-type user. I am the epitome of 'No stupid gimmicks, I want to get something done fast as possible' etc. But during my time using Android as I am currently, I've come to like using Instagram. It's not for professional photographers (If you Instagram'd a picture taken with a DSLR you would deserve to be smacked) - it is for taking pictures with your mobile device, and it offers a small set of tools to enhance them, and quickly share them among your social networks. It then provides a gallery, aggregating photos your friends have taken, offering the ability to Like them, comment on them, and tag them. It really is a nice experience to use, and this is coming from someone who was very skeptical/didn't care that it wasn't on BlackBerry's legacy BBOS.

Onto the policy changes; all the people who are complaining saying "Instagram is going to sell my pictures without consent or notice or payment! blah blah...." Give your head a shake. Instagram/Facebook probably doesn't care about the photo you took of your street or your meal or your car or whatever. This is likely meant for people who have huge network effects on Instagram. I have an account with maybe 90 pictures (@murkjenkins...if you're so inclined), and I couldn't care less about the policy change because I'm realistic enough to know it won't affect me.

Furthermore, if rumors pan out to be true, BB10 will offer a native photo editing/sharing option. While this would provide the same effect for people who don't currently have Instagram, (You can only view on Facebook/Twitter/Flickr etc), it doesn't provide the same Instagram-as-a-social-network experience. For people who are super pissed off about the policy changes; this is a PERFECT option for you. Otherwise, it sounds like Instagram itself WILL be on BlackBerry 10, so if you so choose, you can pick up where you left off and use that.

So everybody CHILL OUT, we're talking about cell phone pictures here.
    Remember to RTFM.

The US is party to several intellectual property right treaties. In most countries, two things happen with photographs:

The photigrapher has an indelible and immediate copyright to his own works.

Copyright ownership cannot be transferred by reverse onus. And in some cases can only be transferred under formal contract.

It is quite possible with the ongoing strengthening of IP laws that instagram will open itself to a bankrupting class action at some point. So good luck to them.

When people post pics to Instagram or Facebook (the Internet) where do you think they are actually going? Nothing's private on the net.

Update from Instagram. They made a mistake in discussing about their new policy.

Instagram makes it clear: 'it is not our intention to sell your photos'

    18th Dec 2012 | 23:06

    Put down your pitchforks...

Hours after a tweet was sent promising light would be shed on impending changes to its privacy policies and terms of service, Instagram's co-founder took to the company's blog to clear the air over the most unsettling-seeming portions.

Kevin Systrom addressed three points in turn: advertising on Instagram, ownership rights and privacy settings, and said that confusing language would be modified to make it clear what will happen to users' photos.

"Our intention in updating the terms was to communicate that we'd like to experiment with innovative advertising that feels appropriate on Instagram," he wrote.

"Instead it was interpreted by many that we were going to sell your photos to others without any compensation. This is not true and it is our mistake that this language is confusing.

"To be clear: it is not our intention to sell your photos. We are working on updated language in the terms to make sure this is clear."

    What we really meant was...

Instagram's advertising vision, Systrom explained, is for both users and brands to promote their photos and accounts to increase engagement and build more meaningful and relevant followings.

If a business wanted to promote itself on Instagram through a promotion, user actions such as following that account or a profile picture might be shown so that others can see who is following that business, Systrom wrote.

In other words, if you follow a bike brand on Instagram, your picture and the fact that you are following that business could show up for other users in a sort of promote-by-social-credibility fashion.

It's un-Instragram to have banner ads, he later explained, so this type of promotion better fits with the company's third-party marketing strategy and its own revenue-generating goals.

Systrom also addressed the issue of whether user photos could be used in an advertisement.

"We do not have plans for anything like this and because of that we're going to remove the language that raised the question," he wrote.

    Other points

Systrom stated flat out that nothing about user content has changed.

"Instagram does not claim any ownership rights over your photos..."

As for privacy settings, not a thing is different there, either.

"Nothing has changed about the control you have over who can see your photos," Systrom wrote. "If you set your photos to private, Instagram only shares your photos with the people you've approved to follow you."

Systrom ended by thanking the Instagram community for its feedback, and noted that the reason the changes don't go into effect for 30 days is to allow for users to comment and ask questions.

While it's nice to finally hear Instagram comment on what has caused a raucous round the web, we'll reserve final say on what Instagram's intentions with its user data and content really are.

The funny thing is it is done all the time for other reasons. Your online pictures could be used somewhere now without any warning. I've seen it happen lots and there's usually little recourse. This "un-authorized use" scenario should be thought about before posting ANY pics online ANYWHERE.

How many people have searched Google Images and posted a link to a picture here on CB? Did you read the terms of use from the site you got it to see if it was OK? That could in turn create page views that CB can capitalize on... They're profiting from someone else's picture without notification.

Yup. Assume they will be seen, know that Twitter and Instagram are completely open, even if Instagram has a setting to make pics available only to people you approve to follow you, do what is possible to restrict FB access. And if you use # you have released pics completely, so plan to lose all control.
People lift pics off of Flickr, Webshots, Photobucket ALL the time. People can retweet pics you've shared.
I'm amateur, I just love to document and share my life with friends and family. And also with specific in-the-flesh and virtual groups with whom I have similar interests, so I share Instagram pics with them. Instagram doesn't care about my pictures of my golden retriever or my border collie, but those groups and friends do, as I like to see their pics too. If I were professional, none of my pictures would be on social media sites. It would be in a private site only for clients. My golden retriever breeder does this, my friend who is a children's photographer does this.

Anyway, the whole drama around Instagram has been resolved.

    Still use it.

    Still want it on BB10.

If it's not on BB10 I will use my iPhone or. SGIII. Like I did yesterday.

I may be trying this once it comes to bb10. Post pictures of things that normally have nothing to do with your life or personal information. See in which way they push ads or other things on you related to that subject.

I do not get the frustration about this, as many mentioned before, always will be a risk to loose our "privacy" when we use the web, always ... there is no control, if anyone wnat to use our photos, they will, because is so easy, so easy to get them, even when you have all this secutiry control on FB ... I decided not to create an Instagram profile and I also deleted (actually closed) my FB profile, if you do not want your personal photos/profile, etc to be on risk, do not put them on any web, any ... we are on a technology moment and here is the risk of this phase.

Its not like if there was an app on bb10 they would force us to post every picture we have on it. I know i wont use Instagram but other people will even with the new terms. I rather have it as an option then not have it at all.
