Is RIM going to drop BBOS, QNX, and everything it has worked towards in the past 2 years to just be another Android/WP7 clone? Crazy. The person writing that article clearly doesn't understand how business works.

Somebody would read engadget's opinion and care? LMAO - okay
They have some kind of hate on for rim, and like I said, they're annoying.

If Warren Buffet was to buy a big stake in RIM, all of wall street would hail the holly grail. They don't even know who Prem Watsa is. Thats ok, its the way he likes it. He made Billions on the wall street inflicted housing crash in the US!
Quote; The catalyst for change appears to have been the entry of a new personality: reserved but revered investor Prem Watsa, CEO of Fairfax Financial. Mr. Watsa, who has been called Canada’s Warren Buffett for his business acumen, has been quietly buying RIM stock for some time. Fairfax is now one of RIM’s largest shareholders, and Mr. Watsa is being appointed to the company’s board of directors after playing a role in key discussions in recent weeks.
If Prem has reasons to believe, they make 1000 x more sense then anything engadget has to say.

With google / Facebook sucking up your data with your 'permission' .
RIM with their balance and fusion tech. Could shield us from this data mining exercise, and provide an alternative way.

I listen to their podcast, and it really doesn't surprise me much, he seems to think rim should just switch to android and have bbm, bis, and bes as their differentiators from other android handsets. He seems to think its too late for another platform.
I can kind of see his point, but I disagree. I do not want my options to be limited to iOS, windows, and android. I like that rim is going for it with qnx, it seems like a great os, very reminiscent of webos which I loved until hp killed it. And you know what? If qnx does fail, they can always switch to android or windows phone then, but i hope they give qnx a fair chance, unlike hp did.

There are certain points I agree with and there are some that I don't. All in all it just an opinion piece an should be treated as such. He obviously sees no place for another OS.
But just to touch on something in the article. Can any long term iOS and Android users tell me what they have innovated over the last few years... And I don't mean garnering dev support.
The way I see it, in the last year Blackberry has brought great multitasking to the tablet, a new gesture interface, and recently a unified email/pim experience second to none and extended Bridge functionailty.
If you ask me Blackberry has innovated more over the past year than any other platform... What kind of innovation is the author talking about?

What kind of innovation is the author talking about? | well, i've been an iPhone user since the launch of the 3g. They really haven't innovated since I got it, but more like they have brought all the features that were common back in the palm/blackberry/windows mobiles days and brought them to iOS. Now don't get me wrong, the way they have implemented those features are great and slick, but nothing really stands out as new other than air play, and even that feature isn't ripe yet, it kills my battery and there is a 2 second delay, so trying to play a game from my iPhone to the big screen is a no go.

engadget's editorial is pretty fair on their analysis of RIM's decision. this guy should have been fired, he's likely chiefly responsible for product bombs and delays spanning years now. and RIM has clearly left mike and jim in very high positions. i dunno, was excited when i first heard they left, now i think it was a terrible decision given their replacement. i've pretty much lost all hope.

They have promoted a guy who is part of the problem to the highest position in the company.
I will definitely be paying more attention now as I would like to see if it was actually Jim and Mike who were the problem or if RIM has more deep routed issues.

What is it now... trading at like 6 x earnings and .5 x its book value?
