Default blackberry gaining popularity in Korea

awesome to see blackberry growing in Korea !! also a great market for the bold 9900.

http://www.koreaherald.com/national/...20111228000827

A growing number of Koreans may be tiring of the fierce rivalry between Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy and Apple’s iPhone here.

Amid the cutthroat competition to dominate the small but important Korean market, Research In Motion enjoyed a boom in its BlackBerry sales this year.

“Korean customers are very smart and demanding. They look for something special and distinctive and with BlackBerry they would get that,” Norm Lo, vice president of Asia Pacific Research in Motion, told The Korea Herald last week.

Even though the managing director of RIM Korea declined to comment on the numbers, SK Telecom, the local network operator, estimated almost a 40 percent growth in BlackBerry sales this year in Korea.

Like other foreign handset vendors such as Nokia and Motorola, BlackBerry has struggled in the Korean market in recent years.

This year, however, its Bold 9900, the thinnest BlackBerry smartphone yet, drove overall sales as the device gained popularity among business people and youngsters here.

The distant fourth player in Korea also made a stronger commitment to the local market this year, establishing RIM Korea and launching localized services such as an after-sales center and a mobile app store.

On Monday, the company also introduced the latest version of Kakaotalk, Korea’s No. 1 mobile app and messenger, which is designed to be run on BlackBerry handsets.

“Having a local team is very important, especially in Korea where customers want local support and local offering,” said Lo, who usually stays in Vancouver and visits Korea once a month.

He visited Seoul last week to join the launching event of the white version of the Bold 9900.

For the multibillion-dollar international company, Korea may not be a mass market. But Lo stressed the strategic status of Korea for the company’s global operations.

“Korea’s telecommunications and smartphone business are extremely advanced relative to the world. It’s very important that we participate in this market and to be very candid for us to learn from Korea,” he said.

Lo, who has overseen the Asia Pacific market at RIM since 2000, praised the growth of Samsung whose Galaxy phones running on Google’s Android operating system gobble up BlackBerry’s sales pie globally.

“I have been with BlackBerry for 12 years and there has always been competition right from the beginning. Now it’s Android, before something else like Windows and Microsoft. That’s also the exciting part of our industry,” he said.

About the reasons why consumers should choose Blackberry, not Galaxy or iPhone, Lo emphasized its unique network system along with the qwerty keyboard and BBM, the BlackBerry messenger.

BlackBerry users’ email and instant messages route through RIM’s own servers and data centers, where they are encrypted and pushed out to subscribers.

“Security and privacy are not so much an issue now. But with mobile payment and everything else coming up, that would be very important differentiation,” Lo said.

“Our products, whether you like or not, are very distinctive. And if you want to be different and progressive, then BlackBerry could be your choice.”

Recently the company’s top executive officials announced that RIM would delay the introduction of new handsets until late next year, which disappointed market watchers and BlackBerry fans.

Lo explained that there are BlackBerry handsets that have yet to be introduced to the Korean market. Even though he would not specify the models for next year’s launch, he hinted a new lineup of handsets could include fourth-generation Long Term Evolution phones.

This is really great news. 40% growth is impressive.

People in Korea probably have a distaste for bickering (a la North-South Korea) and the Apple-Samsung feud is BlackBerry's gain. BlackBerry seems to be about togetherness and getting-along Ex. BB Messenger, BBM Music

I like how RIM is setting up development shops in these countries. Local content is whats needed around the world. Hackathons, Devcon Asia. Good stuff!

40% growth is a good thing, but without knowing the actual numbers - we don't know the whole picture. 40% growth of a small number isn't as impressive - which I get the feeling is the case here as director of RIM Korea didn't want to disclose those numbers.

@ Berklon Its more about the trend then the numbers. BB is a clean, crisp, functional, pleasent platform. Without all the unused clutter around it. It matches the orderly and effective style of Korea.

Yeah, I was negatively thinking that too. But I'll give the benefit of the doubt that even if the numbers are not as high, it has to be high enough that they would actually report on it.

I mean surely they would have better things to report on if it wasn't significant and this is a positive RIM article, virtually unheard of these days, so there's no reason for them to stick their necks out otherwise.

40% growth, after heavy sunsidies and discounts, is nothing in comparison to the several-fold growth by the local brands and apple. Korea is a trand-setting market. If this hold that means things should get unglier with rim. I am very disappointed on the dual-core ceo's for sitting on their laurels. Lazaridis better not walk out of an interview next time for being "so successful."

On a related note; fresh drinking water is considered a luxury in some countries.

Seriously... the mobile/data capabilities in some countries is not where they are in the USA and elsewhere. Watching RIM grow in some places around the world is like 1995 by comparison. A BlackBerry where you can't get the internet via mobile is awesome!

I'm not a RIM hater. I love my 9900. Just saying... BlackBerry is so far behind IOS and Android right now when it comes to the internet to suggest otherwise means you haven't tried one.

These are great markets to focus on since Android and Apple most likely will ignore Korea. RIM should solidify its position in the third world and give the users what they want. This is good news.

LOL, I cannot believe how parochial some posts are on this thread. S. Korea is not the third world! If RIM is making gains in this fiercely competitive Korean market, let's pat RIM on the back for job well done. And not deride this technologically advanced country.

BB 9900 / 9930 offers the best physical keyboard user experience. Something no Android maker has been able to match.
