Lightbulb Blackberry Accelerometer

Is The BlackBerry Getting An Accelerometer?

You know that cool little feature that allows the iPhone to tell if you are holding it in straight up or on it’s side? Well, that is because of a little motion sensing device called an accelerometer.

Word on the street is that Research in Motion has a new patent filling describing such a device that can determine if you are holding your BlackBerry in landscape or portrait orientation? The “word” is in Italian and the “street” is in Italy so we we’ve translated a bit of the article for you.

The patent in question is a system that will allow Blackberry understand the orientation (horizontal or vertical), adapting human interface accordingly. The system operates in a manner very similar to the orientation sensor iPhone and iPod Touch, but the simple variation of the vision of content, in the case of Rim could also implement a change in the function.

As BlackBerry Cool pointed out, the FCC database doesn’t list this filing yet, so, we will leave this in the rumor mill category. With all the talk of slide-out keyboards and accelerometers, it sounds like some really interesting BlackBerry designs will be coming out…

Whadda you think?

Blech, not interested.

I like my BB without a touchscreen, that was a big factor for me.

I also like it without a slide out keyboard, that was another main reason to switch to BB.

It would be nice to flip the phone on the side when viewing a webpage or photo in a different orientation. I mean the trackball could easily be adaptable in landscape mode.

I like the iPhone and all, but if BB gets too much like them, I won't want a BB.

I think RIM will always keep us traditional people (business users) happy with products. We are the core of the base. A touch screen is useless. I have one on my GPS, and it is terrible for me. I stick miss the trackwheel, but they didn't have a bb in stock at the time I upgraded. I don't listen to music, don't watch videos or use the browser for anything other than the weather. I use the email and calender all day everyday. I know there is a market out there for people who want all that extra stuff on their phone, but i'm not one of them. The best part of a bb is the email and how quick it is. A good friend has a treo and he told me his phone only checks for email every 15 minutes. So we did a test and both sent an email out. I got mine in under 2 seconds, he had to manually update his inbox. That alone my friend is worth it.

I don't think he mentioned anything about the a touch screen... frankly i don't care for one either but I have no idea why everybody's rejecting an accelerometer just because the iPhone has one. Thats like saying I don't want a tv because I can download shows on my computer. Why reject progress and technology just because apple has it. Theres nothing thats making it less effective or useful.

I reject because their are many more features RIM needs to catch onto then being able to flip my screen into "landscape" mode...

How about more internal memory?

How about true HTML emails WITHOUT requiring a BES?

How about a decent browser?

How About being able to load/install apps on the memory card?

These are important things to RIM...and I'm glad for that...Apple and Nokia and Windows Mobile can keep their accelerometer features.

I agree with Bla1ze, theres many other more important features that need to be Implemented before "fun" ones.
