Well, it's totaly my experience, with 2 different iphones, one on a different network with was rendered useless by lack of 3G on a long trip. Second on the same network as me, Vodafone uk, my sister in law's iphone, in a small seaside town. Her's would crawl on edge, mine would fly as it was the fast EDGE. She even posted on facebook about it.
Edit- that weekend I was uploading photos to a camera thread using my then new 9900 on edge using the full crackberry site, you can go back and check my posts if you like. Her iphone was useless on the same network.Last edited by belfastdispatcher; 09-15-2011 at 02:52 AM.

Don't panic
SA BB Fan ..here is some information for you, Blackberry Devices are famous with Data Compression..to make it more understandable it compresses the Data 7 Times...So your 100mb Cap Immediately becomes like 700mb on a any normal phone...
Second, don't know how u come to the conclusion that u are using such a amount of data per months....(250mB) to be honest is nearly impossible with normal usage... unless you are on YouTube or PornTube 24/7 on your phone...and While I am on this subject... just to let u know that.. Strimming Media In South Africa on (ANY) Network it has Always been Charged separately (NOT INCLUDED IN BIS BUNDLE ....R59 a month) ...!
And Last But not list....to give you a bit of internal statistic ......OVER 90% of BB Users in South Africa are consuming between 4MB and 8 MB of actual Internet Data per Month!!!
So.. Don't Panic it is not the End of BB ....it is just the Beginning

I don't know where you get numbers from but as of now, 9:30 am, I have already consumed 11MB's. No browsing, a few BBM's and about 25 emails, the bulk of which has attachments.
Nobody is saying that abuse is not happening but a 100 MB throttle limit is just ridiculous. I'd be throttled on day 2 - 3 of my cycle by downloading email attachments alone.
I'm very much in favour of tiered BIS data plans and I will probably end up migrating to one of the higher end packages but I am not in favour of being undermined by a lousy 100MB's especially when 8-ta and CellC have no plans to throttle. To make matters worse both those networks provide data plans at a fraction of the cost Vodascum does. - 09-15-2011, 02:55 AM #31
But unless you stream video, that 100mb throttled would actually give you unlimited data plan as they would only lower the speed. Tiered data plans means you pay more if you reach your limit. I know what I would choose.

I hardly ever stream, if at all. The problem is the speed you get lowered down to is not even edge speed. I was one of those who got throttled and the speeds I was getting were between 5 - 10Kbps. Even browsing is a pain at that speeds...
Now things have returned to normal and I am getting 0.3 - 0.5Mbps on a supposed 3G network...
I like my BlackBerry but if this is the route they are going to take then I might as well get an Android or iPhone because 8-ta is offering 3GB per month for R149 and Cell C has a package whereby you make an outright purchase for R749 and you get a modem plus 3GB per month for 12 months as opposed to paying R59 per month for a 100 MB throttle limit at ridiculously slow speeds. - 09-15-2011, 03:58 AM #33
4-10kbps is gprs speed, your 3G speed is what edge speed should be, 3G should be at least 1mbps download. Anyway, it's not happening now but watch out, they always find another way to get you.
Vodafone uk gave me a veru good plan for £41, 900 minutes, unlimited texts, 750mb data, 25mb roaming data daily and 10 roaming sms daily. Pretty good deal but then I wanted to make an international call but thought I better check the tarrif first, are you sitting down? £1 per minute to call Europe.www.blackberryphoto.com coming soon - 09-15-2011, 05:36 AM #34
When tethering through my 9700 I get between 1 - 2 Mbps and when Bridged I get the 0.3 - 0.5 Mbps consistently. Now that we are on the topic, does this mean BIS is already throttled or shaped in some form? Or are the speeds so low because we use RIM servers in the UK as well as receiving compressed data?
Your international call rate is in line with what we pay this side. I did an audit in Namibia not too long ago and returned with a R7500 bill. - 09-15-2011, 06:16 AM #35
Thethering using DM I assume? That doesn't go trough Rim's NOC servers and it doesn't get compressed.
Testing BIS is never accurate because of the compression, the most accurate way to do that I think is when you download a file trough the browser, it will keep showing the speed, usually around 150kbps on 3G here. This feature is missing from OS7 though.
Also, when you get throttled you don't get knocked back on 2G, your 3G will be lowered enough to stop youtube watching but it will still be better then 2G and it will still allow simultaneous calls and data.
Throttled doesn't mean going back to 2G.

Thread title ought to be cancelled !
Whatever is happening, its a carrier issue. Fight it if there are no better options. But don't inflame BB with that title when BB phones are better at data usage than competing models !

I think we covered this a while ago though. It seems to be that the service in your area/country is absolute garbage.
On AT&T on EDGE, the iPhone would crawl, only compared to an iPhone on 3G. There has never been one single moment I have seen in the last 3 years where an iPhone loses a data speed test/page loading test to a BB on the same connection. At least not in my experience. I had the 3G and 9000 at the same time and 3GS and 9700 at the same time. Totally not my experience.Last edited by avt123; 09-15-2011 at 09:13 AM.

Yes. You will receive faster data speeds tethering through the device than on the device itself. I believe tethering allows your pc/laptop to bypass RIMs servers which then allows for faster data speeds.
RIMs servers is what slows down the data speed. Put a BB right next to an Android device or iPhone and do a speed test on the device. Watch the BB score much lower than the iPhone/Android device even though they are on the same network and are suppose to have similar data speeds. Happened to me all the time with my 3G/3GS and 9000/9700. - 09-15-2011, 09:30 AM #39
59 Rand is less than $10 US at current exchange rate. That is dirt cheap! Your carrier has to pay RIM a monthly fee for each BIS account. In US this is $5 per subscriber. Limited speeds shouldn't be much of an issue with BB because of the BB uses less data. We are trying to get my wife's family still there all on the BB bandwagon for BBM use. She has lots of old friends there that she is able to BBM with now.

Dude, when's the last time you did that? Things have moved on, BIS has been updated a few times, OS5 improved a bit, OS6 a lot and OS7 has to be seen to be beleived. I would've attempted browsing full web pages on OS5 on 3G never mind 2G but OS7 if very fast no matter on what, 2G or 3G. Bold 9000 must be 5 years old by now.
Reality is a blackberry is a lot faster then an iphone when the going gets tough and network slows down.

This is a big subjective, due to the compression you can't measure the speed accurately.
Let's say the BIS download speed is 1mpps, depending on what the 1mb is used for it could, after compression, be 2mp for browsing, 4mp for email, and even straight downloads get compressed, I measured once downloading a podcast, data used was 3/4 of the podcast file size.
Without knowing the compression rate, you can never find out the download speed.
On my 9700 when I was watching youtube the network would disconnect the BIS and connect directly to the carrier's network the same as thethering, on my 9900 that no longer happens and I haven't tried tethering yet, I'll give it a try later out of curiosity.

I can confirm tethering a Vodafone UK 9900 to a laptop using DM no longer disconnects BIS and changes to the carrier network as my 9700 did. It stays solid on BIS>

Too many posts to reply to individually so I'll try and cover as many questions and opinions I've read in the last few pages.
As you might be aware; the SP has backtracked completely regarding the capping of BIS.
The CEO stated that he was as surprised as the consumers when he heard this. *cough*Murdock*cough*
Subsequently it has been claimed to be a PR faux pas.
The concern and subsequent public outcry via social media such as Twitter, Facebook and various online forums were directly linked to the consumer rights.
South Africa has a strong consumer base for mobile phones that are mostly done through 24 month contracts.
The problem came in when the SP altered the T&C's of the service provided that is stipulated in the contract without prior notification to the consumer or offering the consumer an alternative in a nutshell: contract breach.
Unlike the US and UK we do not have the opportunity of various SP providing a competitive service or cost. We currently have MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Virgin Mobile, 8ta and the lastest SP, Redbull Mobile.
Our current broadband infrastructure is still developing as is our mobile infrastructure.
According to facts given to us Vodacom has a 1Gig line for the BIS network connected to RIM which is shared amongst 1.2 000 000 subscribers.
It is a rather long and convoluted story but there are a numbe of concerns and facts that are still being discussed and looking at the future all current SP will be moving towards a more "limited" BIS system.
Interesting times ahead. - 09-15-2011, 10:38 AM #45
Both my 9000 and 9700 had OS 5.
Dude, my friend has a 9700 on AT&T and my VZW iPhone loads pages faster AND has faster data speeds (CDMA network is much slower than AT&Ts 3G). He has OS 6. I tested with mine using OS 5.
The Bold is 5 years old now? That's a shocker. It came out Nov. 4 2008 for AT&T. It runs basically the same exact hardware all current BBs (besides OS 7 devices) have. It is perfectly relevant to test, especially when comparing it to the iPhone 3G, which came out the same exact year. I am comparing old with old.
Full web pages on OS 5 never came close to my iPhones sitting right next to my BBs. Never. It would come closer only if I was using WiFi. Still, not close.
The reality is you are still wrong. I have been through network slowdowns. The entire east coast was hit by a decent earthquake. Millions and millions of people were evacuated and using there devices all at once. Try using AT&T in NYC, it is always a slow down. My BBs never worked any better than my iPhones did. That is just my experience, and since I have experience with both platforms and multiple devices on each platform, I trust it the most.Last edited by avt123; 09-15-2011 at 10:45 AM.

How many excuses do you want to make bro? VZWs network is slower than AT&Ts and still pulled faster data speeds.
Also, if you actually read what I said, you would know I tested my 9000, 9700, iPhone 3G and 3GS all using AT&Ts network. If you knew anything about the iPhone in the US you would know it those models are only available on AT&T. I thought it was pretty obvios before when I was comparing EDGE and 3G speeds on AT&Ts network...
Simultaneous voice and data doesn't matter at all when comparing data speeds. Key word here is DATA. GSM 3G which handles simultaneous voice and data has much faster data speeds than the CDMA network.
Voice does not affect the data. It is made this way so you can use both without harming the use of one or the other. Data speeds do not drop if you are using voice. And not once during the tests was the device using both data and voice, it was run while the device was just pulling data.
