Symbols used for hug emot in BBM?

Could someone help me with this please...

My BF has been having a rough week and I wanted to send him a hug on BBM, but we have different devices. I have the Curve 8530 and my hug symbols are ({}) but all he sees on his Curve 8330 are the symbols and not the hug emot.

Could someone tell me what symbols to type in on my phone so that when he gets it he sees a hug emot and not the symbols themselves?

I'm not sure what version of BBM he has but I do know when I use the hug emot all he sees is ({}) and not the actual emot :-s

Ask him what version bbm he has & maybe we could solve this mystery.

It's v4.5.0 and his carrier is Sprint, if that makes any difference.

Yeah, that's why. I just tested it out on my cousin's BlackBerry (he has 4.5), and only the symbols come up. It has nothing to do with the carrier, it has to do with the BBM version.

OK. I thought that might be the issue as well and I had him check for updates but his device showed there were none.

He can get a newer device, or try a hybrid if he wants BBM 5.0.

Yeah I don't know if he would want to try the hybrid or not, but he's eligible to upgrade his device in January I believe, so he will probably just wait.
