Question about BBM

Today I was sending a BBM to friend and for some reason the p in the word "up" changed to the paragraph symbol. Does anyone know how or why this happened?

Hold 'p' and roll trackball to the right. Many letters have other characters by holding letter and rolling TB. ¶
