BlackBerry App World - BlackBerry Messenger

OTA Link if you don't want to use App World:
    www.blackberry.com/send/messenger

I lost my contacts in the process - make sure you have your BBM backed up (if you're using BBM 5.0.0.8 already) or have an up to date backup file from desktop manager.

First install attempt over 5.0.0.8: Uncaught exception error. BBM not working now. Went back to App World and it was still "ready to install" so giving it another shot before trying a battery pull.

Second attempt: got "there was an error during install" - after clicking OK it told me I needed to reboot to complete the installation. We'll see what I've got when it boots back up.

After reboot: No BBM installed. BB App World says: "Uninstalled" - clicking "Reinstall" and now it's downloading again...

3rd attempt: Appeared to be stuck on "installing" but after forcing it back to the home screen and then going back into App World it said it was installed successfully. Lost all my contacts but had a recent backup file. Running fine now I think!

    Features from CrackBerry:

•Enhanced SMS -Allows for a conversational chat-like user experience with a single contact list for the most personal mobile-to-mobile communications
◦Note: BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 and later is required for the SMS functionality.
•Avatars - Users can choose a picture from the BlackBerry Smartphone gallery and save it as their personal avatar, which will be seen by their contacts. They can also view other avatars in the contact list and zoom in on the avatars of contacts participating in a conversation by selecting "View participants."
•Large Media File Transfer - Users can send/receive large file transfers up to 6 megabytes for pictures, files and audio.
◦Note: BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 is required to receive large media files.
•Enhanced Group Functionality - Allows for the ability to update, share & communicate with a subset community.
•Bar-code Identity - A user can add a contact to the BlackBerry Messenger contact list by displaying a 2-dimensional bar code that invitees can capture with their device cameras.
•Reliable Contact Backup and Restore - Contacts are backed-up on a server and do not require the need for BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Works great on 5.0. It's a big ol' honker though, 2+MB? Memory free down to 24mb from 31 before installing BB App World and Messenger.

You shouldn't need to delete the old one - though it may avoid some of the errors I'm having - your call though. Most likely just download it and it'll ask you if you want to replace your current version with 5.0.0.33 and then cross your fingers!

The bb servers must be doing overtime, sending emails is a pain and broswing is so slow.

Did anyone actually get the confirmation email for the "remote backup"?

Nevermind: Just had to go to "backup contacts" and tell it to do remote backup again.

The CrackBerry.com blog post says you can download it from blackberry.com/blackberrymessenger without using App World but that link does not work for me in IE8 nor my BB Browser.
