BBM Smilies...?

I bbm smilies all the time and they work (had bb for over a year and a half) - but my mate said instead of smilies he got brackets, semi colons and puncuation so he didn't get my message even though he always usually gets smilies fine from me. I just used the ones in symbols, and it came up on my screen as the smilies I wanted to send, and it said sent and read.

Is this typical and how is it solved?
