bbm recent updates question

trying to make it short

I have a friend on bbm who uses a curve 8520 and i get many status updates from him, even if he doesn't change his status or contact picture. It shows : X changed display picture, but it's the same picture, or X changed display name, but it's the same name. It happens at random times, not a specific interval, even at night.
The best i could think of is, since he uses a 2g phone and he's not using wifi, data and voice are not working at the same time. And if he talks, bbm gets disconnected, after he ends call then bbm reconnects and updates his status.
Anyone has a better idea? It's just curiosity, I don't have too many bbm contacts, but the others statuses are not updating for nothing\.
