Default Legal or Illegal?

So really i'm seeing sites being listed/created and post for movies. But how legal is this? From what i've read about the laws its perfectly legal to "rip" a dvd that "you own" for personal use. But sharing that ripped movie you own for profit or free is illegal. So what makes this section of crackberry legal? People go crazy when a game like "drug lords" is created and featured on the main page of crackberry... citing this is a family site, yet illegal movies are being ripped and posted for free download.

With all of that said my question was based on personally wanting to know how legal/illegal this section is...why because I own over 740+ dvds (yes own over $12k worth of dvds) and I'm in the process of ripping all to a media server for home use. Now, if its legal by any chance for me to post all of those movies online in a smaller .mp4 mobile format i'll do it in a heart beat for everyone here. But, the legal stuff has to be clear before I think about doing that, 1-2 movies posted is fine but 740+ movies i'd be a nice target for a lawsuit if its 100% illegal.

I think you have already answered your own question. Obviously, copying and distributing copyrighted content is illegal. Do so at your own risk.

I personally think it's illegal and people who post them do so at their own risk (and benefit to others).

North America in general is pretty ballsy about pirated stuff (see: Pirate Bay debockle), but it's not like this sub forum is international waters where the laws don't apply or something. They do, but Moderators aren't lawyers. Not everyone knows piracy laws in their full extent, and so content is content. As long as it's not advertisements, pornography, etc, it's good to go, including illegal pirating.

In my opinion, I definitely would not put up 740+ movies because you're basically painting a giant bullseye on your IP address for the F.A.G.'s of the movie industry.(aha, Team America reference!) But that's just me. I use the same name for everything so for me, GlitchZero is just a substitute for my real name. If you think you're anonymous enough online, you might get away with it. Or you might not, who knows.

The purpose of this sub-topic is to share information about converting and using video on BlackBerry.

There never was an intention to create an outlaw movie resource to rival the Torrent down loaders.

We rely on our members to police the forums and report occurrences of illegal activity. They will be dealt with.

You may post a link to such a listing page, but no links to directly download file, unless you are the content creator with that legal right.

So just a question for comparison...

So it's fine to post links to pirated movies (by this forum's standards), but it's not OK to talk about or post info how to unbrand a BlackBerry?

Help me understand the logic here?

Thanks for all the post, i'll keep my private collection private. I don't want to take the risk. When mobile video streaming gets better i'll look into that, since I can prove ownership of all movies and as long as the movie content is not being kept by the viewer at the end I should be fine.

I think RIM knowingly releases the beta OS. I just find it hard to believe a company that has the #1 business secure phone can't stop there beta OS's from being leaked on a monthly bases

Uh..links to pirated movies would still be 'warez' or whatever, technically. They would still want it reported.

i would love to do something like mSpot Mobile Movies for the Crackberry community mSpot Mobile Movies - stream and watch movies instantly on your PC and phone for free. I just have to look more into the laws on streaming personally own movie and i'd do it for $2 a month or free depending on the overhead cost. I'll look into it and let everyone know what I find.

hence the `ginneau pig` comment, they should call it `accidentally leaked on purpose`

There's really no question of legal vs illegal. It's 100% against the law, or the FBI warnings wouldn't be at the beginning of videos. Everyone just skirts the issue by saying "well, I link to it, but it's not specifically on my web space" (even if they uploaded elsewhere themselves), or "this is for informational purposes only!" ...please On some level everyone knows it's wrong. Most people just don't care. It goes on so rampantly all over the net, it's no big deal, right?

The reality is that as long as they don't think they'll get caught, people will do most anything they want. With online copyright trafficking, it's a slim chance you'll be the one nabbed (unless you're the one running a website promoting piracy). Just remember slim does not equal none, and the RIAA wins case after case with millions of dollars in judgments each year against people that didn't think sharing was a big deal.

I'm not claiming to be any kind of a saint. I had a pretty successful website / streaming venture of UK material for people in the USA until the BBC themselves stepped in and contacted me. It was really nice to hear them compliment my work, but of course it had to stop. As fun as that was, you won't catch me doing it again.

So does anyone know the per-say fine for each movie you download to watch?
Also even if you delete the movie after viewing your ip address is still logged on the dl site so your still facing the fine or jail time?
I just found the video links last night and before I do anything I would like to no what can happen.
