If you have not had an unlock done on your account (assuming you are still with Verizon) in a while, you should be able to activate the 9650, get Global Support to unlock it and then deactivate it, all with 1 or 2 phone calls and for free. Call 1-800-922-0204 and ask to be connected to Global Support. You MIGHT even be able to tell them the truth they are usually pretty cool about it, BUT if you don't want to chance it, just tell them you are traveling and want to use a SIM from the country you are going to, then agree to the rights waiver and you are set.
