Default why cant leaked or beta OS's be an OTA ?

Like the title says why not? I have a mac and can't put windows on it for a while. .75 works fine for me but so many people say they can never go back. Iwould like to see what all the hype is about

Because the OTA distribution mechanism is something that is controlled by the individual service providers, and a leaked/beta/unofficial OS is, virtually by definition, not yet approved by the service provider for distribution.

its not nearly as simple as downloading a theme. i wish i knew more, but im not too familiar with exactly how OTA OS updates work.

A theme is a URL. When you an OTA software update, the phone checks a pre set URL specified by the carrier.

This is a pretty good question ... I'd be interested in any info ... I don't know for sure, but my guess would be that when you download themes, they're JAD files; Downloaded to your phone and then "installed" ... But an OS update takes place on a different level ... Maybe the wireless upgrade under advanced options is the only thing that is able to run at that level (i.e. you can't download a "batch" or "executable" file to "run on next boot" ... excuse the Windows lingo, haha)

Haha you excuse. Its all good. It being on a different level kind of makes sense. I don't know what a jad file is so I am no help there

Or maybe its because the file is like 120 megabytes and you can't download a file that size over the air.

duh.

You should get flamed for this one (but I won't go there). BlackBerries, as it stands today, can update their OS's OTA. It's been that way. Sure, you might not be able to download the setup files for DM very quickly OTA, but the actual update files (patches, etc) already get down to the phone somehow, right?

The term OTA refers to over the air download. An OS can not be installed that way. The ota for an official is essentially turned into a patch to supplement and replace your existing OS. Find someone who knows how to do that and your in business.

Its not that it can't be done, just nobody knows how to do it.

Sure you could, it would just take a while, but time and bandwidth consumption is not the issue.

The leaked OS'es aren't packaged for OTA distribution. They are executables for Windows installation. Someone with the appropriate set of coding skills would need to package the extracted files together in a manner which would allow them to install like any other OTA app. Until someone takes it on, or our carrier releases an official update, no soup for you.

In theory there's no reason why it couldn't be done... It's just a matter of no one outside of VZW/RIM really knows exactly HOW they do it... And even if we knew how they packaged it up, there would be issues with the amount of bandwidth required, pushing some kind of app to the phone to initiate the update process, and several other distribution items.

It does kind of raise the issue of why RIM couldn't push out a steady stream of minor updates to OTA capable devices. Just updates that fix one or two issues, or make some minor tweak.

My two cents worth.... Bottom line is liability. They know the leaked OS's aren't ready, and if they were to release it OTA then the consumer would have the right to cry foul when they DL'd it and it didn't work well enough.

The software developers probably want all their ducks in a row when they hand it over "officially" and then have to support it.
