Hybrid OS/web browser/speed tweaks?
I've searched the forum and there does not seem to be definitive information regarding what is the best way to gain speed on the tour.
My main questions are as follows:
Would installing a hybrid OS help? If so, PLEASE elaborate and link to the source of said OS.
What is the fastest web browser? The BB browser, Skyfire, or Bolt?
What are some speed tweaks?
I know how to kill background processes, and that is about all.
Hopefully someone here can answer these questions in detail! - 08-15-2009, 10:43 PM #2
Link to hybrid OS in my sig.
You can't use skyfire on a blackberry anymore, unless RIM has unblocked it. Opera mini is great, bolt is good too. For me, the default browser works fine too. - 08-15-2009, 11:05 PM

I just tried to install the hybrid OS. However...visually I see nothing different and when I check my core file versions, they all say 4.7.1. My memory left free for apps is 121 MB.
I followed the instructions to a T. I was able to shrink my OS down to 35 MBs, but when I did the loader.exe it had no reference to all of the files I removed and tried to install two games? Sorry to bother you, I'm just a little confused. - 08-15-2009, 11:34 PM #4
Look at the version of your modules. You should also have BBM 5.

So far I am having horrible luck. All modules are 4.7.1.40. Its apparent that I'm not reinstalling the OS now. After I have shrunk the OS and added the 5.0 files, I know exactly where the OS folder is. However, when I run the loader it says there are not actions to be done. I was going to use JL_Cmder, but I have windows 7 64bit and thus I can't run it. I'm stuck as to how to update this OS...

Backup your BB. You can use BBSAK to wipe the device. Then, it will prompt you to reload software. This time when you run loader, it should install the hybrid. Then you can restore your settings with DM.

So i have wiped the device. Right after, I run loader and it says that it does not have the software to run on my blackberry. Then i try DM, and it can install the OS again, but its the original. I've unplugged my Ethernet cable and it claims I do not have the OS.

Do you have 4.7.1.40 installed?
You need to have that installed first, then install the hybrid OVER it, then shrink and load. You can get 4.7.1.40 from the sticky at the top of this forum.
If you already have it installed, try to uninstall the hybrid, uninstall it, then reinstall it, then reinstall the hybrid. - 08-16-2009, 02:12 AM

For whatever reason I can't get the hang of this. I'd really appreciate more detailed instructions. So far I have downloaded the 4.7.1.40 OS. I've then executed the .exe file where it then unloads some of the OS into my OS folder. From there I use shrink-a-os, then install from the loader. When I did this, my OS was horribly corrupt. I've spent nearly 5 hours and none of the walk-throughs cover the difficult parts and seem to concentrate on the retardedly easy portion(de-selecting programs? durrrr). So i'd appreciate a step by step install directions. When do I wipe? when to i install the original OS, when do I run the shrink a os, is the shrink-a-os have the hybrid OS with its installer, when do i run the loader? all things I have done out of order and its gotten me an f'ed up phone.

Make sure OS 4.7.1 is already loaded on your computer and your BB.
Run Desktop Manager and re-install OS.
Confirm 4.7.1 is the OS on your BB.
When all that is done, do the following.
1. Install 4.7.1 OS on your computer.
2. Install Hybrid OS 4.2 on your computer.
3. Connect BB to computer.
4. Run installer and Shrink with BB connected.
5. Remove unnecessary items, shrink.
6. Run loader.exe. Alternatively, navigate to AppLoader folder and run loader.exe from there.
7. Remember to check "backup random stuff" when prompted.
8. Let it install. DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR BB.
9. When screen says complete, close the program. DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR BB.
10. Wait for BB to reboot. DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR BB.
11. Once rebooted, you can disconnect. Do a battery pull.
12. Wait for reboot.
13. Enjoy.
