Default How important is it to run the most recent OS6 ... Or: please help!

Please help ... I'm trying to update my bberry OS from v6.0.0.285 (is that very old?) to v6.0.0.666, but I can't get Blackberry Desktop Manager to recognise it. These are the instructions I've been following:

Check Windows / Control Panel / Programs to verify both are correctly installed.

Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager and select Applications. If you are not prompted to do an upgrade install, there is one additional step.

Navigate to c:\programs\common files\research in motion\apploader. Scroll to the bottom and delete the file Vendor.xml. That is a security file that controls which carrier branded model get the software. Deleting it make it available to all carrier brands.
And this is what I've tried:

It's installed properly and shows up in the Windows add/remove programs manager. I've deleted vendor.xml (only I found it in C/Program Files/Common Files/Research in Motion/Apploader). Now, I try to open Blackberry Desktop Manager to install it, but it doesn't offer to do anything ... what's the next step?
What do I do next? If I click update it tells me my software's up to date, and if I click import files, I don't know what appropriate file I might be looking for.

Solution (partially, I'm still stuck): deleting Blackberry Desktop Manager, reinstalling the device software, deleting the vendor.xml file and then running loader.exe finally picked it up.

However, loader.exe hangs at 'uploading RAM image' and the blackberry is completely unresponsive till I pull out the cable and restart it. How can I fix this?

Did you try just using Loader before uninstalling & re-installing everything?
I always recommend just never using DM for loading an OS. Use it for a precautionary Backup, then close it. Even if it offers the upgrade, I decline.
Then navigate to the Loader file, double-click, and away she goes…

At what stage is "uploading RAM image"? I can't remember…

you need to research this for yourself. there are OS findings and fixes threads for each new or leaked OS. generally speaking, any newer OS is usually more refined and better performing than the last. but thats subjective and you wont know which one is better for YOU until you load it.
