| | Error 507- Computer wont detect at all!
so i have been up for the past couple hours trying to install a new OS on my phone. I went a head and wiped my phone and then went to install the new os. well my problem is the computer wont detect my berry. I have tried numerous times running the app loader and then connecting my berry with and without the battery in, and then waiting for the com1 to change to the USB in-unkown or whatever. but no luck. I have left it sit for long periods of time just watching with the battery in and out...i dont know what to do! |

| | Don't fret
507 error means no OS installed on BB. There are a multitude of threads on how to load the OS.

It seems as if you have been following some procedures to recover already, such as forcing a manual connection with AppLoader.
First of all, make sure your Berry is connected directly to the PC, not through a USB hub or anything!
Then, follow this guide : http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/how-...ckberry-32322/

Hate to say it, but you shouldn't have wiped the phone first with javaloader if that's what you did. There are far too many instructional threads on here and other BB forums that instruct users to do this first. It simply is not needed. The application loader does all of this for you, but in a proper state. The only time javaloader should even be introduced into the equation is if a manual wipe is required because the phone will constantly reboot or something else that's keeping the phone from properly talking with the app loader in Desktop Manager.

| | It is all better now
Well I did do a complete wipe of the phone. I was actually following instructions from bmc on how to load a new OS. It was fine until the computer would not detect the phone. But eventually I decided to try restarting my computer and giving it another try. I was able to connect once it restarted, i didnt get the new os on, but the old one is on and working.

Does the DM wipe the phone on an upgrade? Yes. Does it back up 3rd party applications? Yes, but they are lost more often than not during the upgrade. Thats why it's best to back them up seperate, because the DM can/will lose them.
Back to the subject at hand, yes the DM does wipe the device, but it is not the same wipe as JL_Cmder nor is it a thorough. I'm not saying this is needed on every upgrade, but it is suggested every few upgrades or so. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners though. As this case is an example of what could happen. Also, at my work, the device is completely wiped(not with DM) before upgrading a device. Also, beta testers usually use this practice as well. But to each his own, whatever works. |

Not once. I still however do my own manual backup prior to the automated one, but I make sure the upgrade process is set to backup and restore everything (including 3rd party apps). Have never run into issues. I find it hard to believe I'm alone on this, but it wouldn't be the first time something has worked for me and others have had trouble with the same process.

Well, I've seen plenty of instances of members on here losing 3rd party applications during a upgrade. Also, if something goes wrong(brick, etc) they are gone. Thats why ppl should back them up separately. As far as the wipe goes, that is how we do it at work. But I agree, it will work both ways....sometimes.. |

Anyway, you should put in a request to make backing up of 3rd party apps a lot simpler if you have the means. A simple check option on the manual backup screen would help. There's no reason why it shouldn't be there.

I was scared of using jl_cmder to wipe before installing a new OS for a while...not anymore, do it everytime now. You just have to backup your device first, then backup 3rd party apps using switch device wizard. Then wipe, delete vendor xml and load DM. Goto apploader and youre all set.
Don't know whats so hard about this procedure?
