Don't use MAC to update leaked OS for Storm
Well I finally update my storm a few days ago to .141 and I need to tell the story so no one else does this.
First step I contacted a user on crackberry by the name of patches152. I read the posts about how to update the storm to a leaked OS. Patches seemed well educated on the topic so I contacted him.
I read the "How to" install OS. so I knew what to do, the problem was that I don't run windows and DM is not supported by macs. So I did what anyone of us would do, get a copy of windows from a previous owned computer and install it using VMWear Fusion.
For those of you who do not know what this does it creates a virtual window machine, kind of like an emulator. Kind of weird going back to a PC, but anyhow, I downloaded DM and I plugged in my phone, followed the steps to back everything up.
Got my contacts and calendar events backed up but when I went to back up my apps I got the blue screen of death on my virtual machine, and it restarted. Mind you the mac did not restart. I waited for it to restart and tried it again, about three times later I finally decided to forget it and try to just update the OS like I wanted.
I got to the uploading part where the computer got stuck loading a specific part of the Core programming app of your BB. I thought it was taking a long time so I decided to lay down and take a cat nap. 2 hours I woke back up and it was still on the same screen. Well the only thing I could do was close the Virtual Machine (VM) and restart it. When I did I got the error please reload on my storm. I bricked it (I think that was bricking it).
So I freaked out. This was about 3 AM and I needed my phone the next day. So I tried it again and the blue screen of death showed up again. So I decided I would load all the OS that I downloaded from here and DM on a flash drive and take it to work where I could load DM on that PC and try from there.
Woke up and the first thing I did was try it on a real PC. after about 2 hrs of working through everything, I got it. That included the time it took to update to .132 and then to .141.
I finally got it working, and I LOVE it. Way better than .76 or whatever the last official was for Verizon.
Basically guys I want to inform you to not use a Virtual Machine to load an OS on your storm, but if you do brick it, its super easy to unbrick it. I've never tried it with bootcamp so I don't know if that works or not.
I have to agree with patches152, if you want to upgrade to a leaked and you have a mac, borrow a friends computer and save the headache. Sorry I'm new if this is not in the right place or it's too long. Take care everyone. PM if you have any questions. - 05-18-2009, 12:59 AM #2

Bootcamp here too.
No problems. Parallels was worthless for me though.

I do both... I've run Vista via Boot Camp & used my Boot Camp partition through VMWare Fusion too. All good.

i use parallels which is the same thing as VMWare except better, and i have no issues. User Error maybe? maybe ur computer couldn't handle the work load of running VMWare because VM's are indeed cpu intensive. glad to know everything worked out okay.

USER error! People should know how to set up a Mac or VMWare before playing with it. BSOD points to bad Windows install IMHO. Did about twelve FW installs with Mac and VMW/Windows.

VMWare fusion works fine. My favorite of them all.
Parallels is dead to me due to how they want to constantly charge you for updates on functionality they promised in the version your bought. Plus their usb host function is yet to be desired.
A free alternative is Virtualbox which works very well also. I have 4 diffrent blackberry's using virtualbox and winxp.
I have vista and use it with bootcamp. Also can boot it up in VMWare like everyone else and it works fine.
I dont think it was the software the OP was using. Thinking it might have been user error. We the unwilling led by the unqualified for so long with so little we now attempt the impossible with nothing.

The only times I've had problems updating my BB in VMware Fusion is when I took the focus away from the window. For instance, if I've got VMware open and I go back to browsing with Firefox on OS X. If I stay inside the VMware window, it works every time.

I've done many OS upgrades on my Mac via VMware Fusion with Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 and I've never had any issues. Works just like a real PC.

Don't use Parallels, and for the guy who is the most interesting man in the world
do some reading behind it and find out why I say so. I also know this from personal experience.
VMware and I've had no problems.Totally addicted!!

Also I've used Parallels and it isn't "better" then VMware. Once I downloaded and tested VMware I dumped Parallels in my trash can.
If you have the ability to use Windows, either boot camp or VMware is fine. Basically the reason Mac can run Windows is the Pentium processor. Reality is Mac is a computer, just like PC.Totally addicted!!

I run VMware Fusion on a MacBook Pro and I've done various "official" updates and the Lyricidal, BBCrackman and OneOfAKindDPC hybrids via XP in emulation and the only problems have been some easily recovered botched installs due to my lack of knowledge (which I rapidly solved with some quick Google searches.) If you're getting consistently bad results, it isn't your Mac or the emulation package that's the problem...mine has worked 100%.

Well thanks guys, I didn't know that others were able to do it. I feel now that it was user error. I installed an old copy of windows xp, and in so doing I learned that sp2 was not included on the disk, maybe this was the reason. IDK, nor do I care, as long as my BB works. Other than that I followed direction to the T like I said, so I knew what I was doing.
Sorry for the long post next time I will keep it short and to the point - 05-19-2009, 02:25 AM #24
