Steve, It's not a stupid question. I do not know the answer. I can see the following possibilities.
1). They are deliberately leaked. This seems to me to be the most likely since RIM then gets free beta testing with full deniablity. All they have to do is to read here and elsewhere to get feedback.
2). It's a real beta tester leaking without RIM's permission. This has clearly happened too because there were some truly horrible releases early on that shoul, imo, never have been out there.
3). RIM don't care and here is an unofficial group (probably the OS developpers) who are doing the leaking. Programmers tend to care about their work (funny that) and they may be lurking here and elswhere.
I tend to think that all three have/are hapenning.
For me there are two theories to the universe, Screw-up and collusion. I reside firmly in the Screw-up camp.

If I was a betting man I'd go for you first point Pete. Free risk free testing has to be good for them doesn't it? Having said that, even if this was confirmed as true, I'd guess that many people on this forum would still be happy to carry on doing the testing for them. |

Even if they don't leak these things out on purpose, a business like RIM can't complain to much about free beat testing with full deniability. However, they did shut down the adlen site.

| | Really I mean Really
Really, are people that crazy for a "point whatever" I can understand upgrading from 4.2 to say 4.5, but why can't you just wait until a full release. I am noticing more and more people are having ISSUES with these beta OS, then when it is released. We all need to chill and have a drink.
oh crap it just started raining, there goes my golf game |

oh crap it just started raining, there goes my golf game | Its all about the bleeding edge, upgrading to 4.5 is the big leap, like you said, but if a more stable/improved version comes out? Who wouldn't want something that technically should be better? And that's not limited to the Blackberry, I'm the same way with allmy other gadgets too, I was this way with my HTC Wizard, etc. You may be right, it may be crazy, but I may just be a lunatic.

If nobody tells anybody then you should be ok to keep your eyes wide open and, of course, that is gonna happen, right guys ?
Remember the Washington DC axiom: If two people know it then it's not a secret.

oh crap it just started raining, there goes my golf game | Funny, some people just want things to work......but never figure out how or help make it happen. Some of us love having the latest, maybe bug ridden, software or device to help get things working. Guess it is in some of our natures. We have people at work who will NEVER jump in prototype cars and help debug things, then there are those of us who will. More fun for us!
