A couple of days ago I turned on my 8830 up & saw the Your-handheld-is-now-registered PIN message, duplicated nine times, in the messages folder. My handset was registered early last spring. Anyone know what this is about?

That happens when service books are resent to your device or your device is re-registered on a network.

I've heard/read the term "service books" before--what is it?

It's an area of the phone that has "books" provided to the device by your carrier which enable certain services or features.

Why would these service books be resent?

Your carrier may have updated information in the service books that they changed so they resent them.
