Blackberry pin is for blackberry to blackberry communications. It is just another method of communication. It works similar to email, but can also be used as an instant messenger program if you download blackberry messenger. Every BB has a unique pin code which identifies it. The BlackBerry PIN is kinda like its MAC address. Each BlackBerry has a unique PIN that identified that particular device, much like the IMEI number for regular phones. Yes, your BB has an IMEI, too, I know. But it also has a PIN.

You can send direct PIN-to-PIN messages to other BB users, and BlackBerry Messenger uses PIN-to-PIN for IM/chat over the data network without costing you SMS text messages!
