On my centro, I could assign a quickdial key to start a text message to a person, instead of dialing them. Is it only possible to use quick dial for voice calls? i.e., holding the D key on the home screen to dial Darryl.

Nevermind, looks like this has been asked:

Not sure why that didn't show up in my first search.
