Hi all, I'm a 21 year old student and I want to get a blackberry device.

Considering my needs I'm struggling among 3 versions of the pearl. the 8100, 8110, 8120.

My main question about this is.. If I'm going to pay for a data plan, would the Wi-Fi will be needed? otherwise the 8100 or the 8110 would do the job...

    My needs are simple:
    Newspapers, ebay (general browsing)
    PDF Files and Word Docs
    mail accounts (three)

    opinions are well received

Just a question, why is the pearl your only choice?

No, wifi is not necessary with a data plan. The different models of pearl depend on your carrier. Also, the pearl doesn't support pdf and word docs without the newest 4.5 os.

    8100 - No Wi-Fi, No GPS
    8110 - GPS
    8120 - Wi-Fi

Also, if you upgrade to OS 4.5 8110 and 8120 will be able
to record video, the 8100 will not.

Which carrier are you considering? T-Mobile has the cheapest Blackberry plan - email and Internet for only $20 a month on top of the voice plan, while other carriers reqire $30 or up. Right now, T-Mobile is offering 30 day free trial of unlimited internet/email service.

I would love the pearl because of the size.
Regarding the 4.5, then must be a 8110 or 8120.

I own a Nokia N95 8GB and it is sooo nice but too much for my needs, its a media monster nevertheless I'd love to have a data killer.

8120 is the one available with my carrier... would that be the right choice, to get into ebay (I'm an EBAY freak...) newspapers (newspaper freak,, 3 or 4 at least daily) and 3 email accounts... if you tell me that it will do the job that would be nice...

Ill assume that the curve will do the job as well (8320) if the pearl does it.

    Thanks for your advice

To my knowledge, you can't fully access mobile ebay - IE you can't bid and whatnot.

Would I be able to check the 3 email accounts with no problems? I know I'll only receive alerts from 1 of them but I like to check them all day long.

Normally i would say that a BB was the best option but I am not sure if working with PDF's that it would be the best unit... I have OS 4.5 and while DOCs to go lets me work with Word, excel and Powerpoint.. PDF viewing is pretty rough...
