It's an added feature(sleep mode to me) starting with os 4.6 and latter builds.
It activates when locking or charging the newer berries.

To set a different face for the clock, stopwatch, or timer functions on the BlackBerry smart phone clock app:
To modify the clock settings:
Clock application>
Press menu>
click options>
Choose the clock face, stopwatch, or timer face option>
Analog, Ditigal, or Flip Clock or your options>
Click menu>
Click save
