User-made 9700 Hybrid Discussion
The purpose of this thread is for 9700 owners to come and discuss custom self-built hybrids. Anyone can do it, it's not that hard! Everyone has different reasons for wanting them- here's the spot to share info, suggestions, and results.
I'll get the ball rolling:
Our 9700's haven't had a leak in what seems like ages. Our last release was .680, which is comparatively ancient. Therefore, I made my own easy-peasy hybrid using the .680 base, and the just-leaked .748 Java files from the Pearl 9100 / 9105. It seems to work well.

Preliminary tests show the native browser, BBM, various apps, phone calls, wifi, and GUI working fine. Not sure if I'll see any major improvement, but it's always nice to run the latest stuff possible (barring any major glitches).
PS. Wifi seems very solid with this .680 / .748 hybrid. We've got a picky, miserable router here so there's usually some glitches... this time, I've been solidly connected for over an hour (listening to Pandora, using Opera Mini, chatting on Beejive and BBM) without issue or disconnect. Might be a fluke, but first impression is there's some definite improvement.Last edited by CharredPC; 06-03-2010 at 05:55 PM.

This is good, yet bad. Everything will be spread and no user will use the 2 same files. But it can be good for innovation!

Glad to here it's working for you- with no glitches.

Ah, but why do two users have to use the same files? Uniformity isn't always better for individuals, and sometimes collaboration can get a lot more accomplished than one single overworked source
I think there's plenty of room for both avenues.
Thanks. Yeah, nothing bad to report thus far. It's early, of course, so I'll keep everyone posted here. Not noticing any "wow!" stuff, but if everything runs 100% stable and smooth, I'm happy.Last edited by CharredPC; 06-03-2010 at 06:09 PM.

It's not hard! Here's how I did mine:
1. Download .680 and install
2. Download .748 (download links are on the bbleaks website) and install
3. Navigate to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\Loader Files"
4. Enter the .748 folder, right-click on the Java folder, choose Copy
5. Back out and now go into the .680 folder, right-click, and choose Paste
6. Say yes to overwriting / replacing everything
7. Make sure your phone is connected, internet disconnected, all vendor files are erased, and run "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader\Loader.exe"
That's all there is to it! It takes 15-30 minutes to complete the update, and afterward your About screen should show .748 just like mine.

That's still wrong.
You need to bring in your media files, themes, and clock faces from .680I give away a lot of apps and themes... PM me to know how to get them!

Oh great.. CharredPC.. Most of the time, simply over-writting a JAVA folder from another build will cause some problems but its good that this isn't an issue for you..
Pwncakes: Been using your v6 and so far its working great for me. I'll try this 748 and see how it goes.. Otherwise, I'll wait for your v6.1 soon

Great! Day two here, and everything's still going well thus far. I should warn everyone, I'm not a big believer in the whole "faster, snappier, cures cancer!" announcements. It's really just an incremental OS update; I prefer to run the newest stuff, but I don't expect it to magically double the processor speed and use half the battery power doing it like some people seem to
I'll be happy if things run smooth, stable, and problem-free. If it does enhance functionality in any way... bonus!
IMO, if RIM changes some modules, there was probably a reason. Being in IT for years, I think people often oversimplify things. Did you know Windows 95 is pretty much the fastest x86 OS? it's true! But I wouldn't ever recommend it. Later versions offer much more in terms of stability, less memory leaks, functionality, etc. The same likely goes for our phones. Not that swapping a file to cure a certain beta's (leak's) specific bug is unreasonable, don't get me wrong... - 06-04-2010, 12:20 PM #15
Yes don't worry.. I just like the idea that my .xxx is higher than my previous one.. Yes, I actually don't see any difference compared to previous OS in terms of anything.. I think if people see any difference, its most probably psychological. But again, if you think the new device can cure you, so be it.
Anyway, one of the problem that I had was with the ringtone. If I enable bluetooth and after using my bluetooth headset, my ringtone (all notification) will not work anymore. I need to reboot the phone. This happen even on other hybrids but doesn't matter much to me as I seldom use this.

Thanks CharredPC! Just copying the .748 Java folder over the .680 works just fine. I will let you know how the WiFi works out for me - really need it too because I have lots of problems keeping my 9700 connected here at work. Otherwise everything is working very smoothly so far....

Very interesting discussion. Might make me try this over the weekend. Now has anyone looked at the .748 radio to see if that will work?

Ok the WiFi definitely works better now with the .748 Java files. I have tried it now on 3 different networks that historically have had issues w/ the 9700 OS' thus far -smooth sailing now =)

Thanks for the feedback! Glad to know it isn't just me. The Wifi worked okay on .330, but nothing since then has stayed very stable for me. I blamed my lousy cheap router, but then again all my other devices (Wii, laptops, etc) work okay with it. This fix alone was worth making the upgrade, and is a good example of why hybrids can be a good thing

Only issue i have had with a 748 over replace on 656 was the phone app cannot hang up. I am trying a base of 656 because of 680 and BT pairing issues i have had with play controls. I am installing again with 656 base and phone with 748 otherwise.

As PC said earlier, it doesn't always work. Some OSs are very compatible with each other and others aren't. Depending on the app platform, and the type of blackberry. Some cods are the same across most devices, and some are specific to a certain group of devices. For example the 8520, 8900, 9000 are very compatible. It takes experience to know what works and what doesn't, and what to do when you encounter an error like "not being able to hang up the phone", and your media functions not working properly. A good hybrid builder learns from mistakes, and is able to use the best attribute (user interface, speed, battery life, browser speed, etc) of different OSs and puts it into 1 OS. Anyway, it's ok to experiment, as long as you know how to unbrick your berry ;p
LOL, and learn from your mistakes.Back in Black!
