Default GPS display question

In the dashboard what does the middle display mean?
On the left it shows your speed and on the right it shows direction but the middle display is a number (usually a single digit #) and an arrow looking thing pointing in a NW direction but I'm pretty sure it nothing to do with direction. I can't find anything anywhere else. Anyone got an answer for this. I've just been curious.

Thanks.

The NW pointing arrow icon is supposed to suggest a satellite with solar arrays. The number next to it is the number of satellites that BBMaps is seeing, typically 9-12.
