Default Garmin with v7 support coming soon(ish) to AppWorld

I bought Garmin mobile on my 8830 a number of years ago and have quite liked it, cheaper and more convenient than a standalone GPS and no monthly cost like Telenav. I am planning on upgrading to a 9930 as soon as it appears on the corporate approved devices list (they promise it will be soon), so in preparation I sent an email to Garmin to ask about support for 9930, and here is the response I got:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. We expect to have a build for the Blackberry OS7 before the end of the year. It may not be purchased in the same way as the current version, as RIM has implemented a "market" of sorts. We are hoping to have the build available before the end of November.

Default Garmin delay - is there another talking map app?

I also liked Garmin on my Storm. I just got the Torch 9850 and am disappointed to learn it will lbe another month before Garmin will be on OS7. It was my mistake for not checking - I foolishly assumed that they would have done something since the Bold's had been out for a while.

Anyone know another map-directions app that talks?

Dear XXXXXX,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Unfortunately as of right
now Garmin does not have a scheduled release date for the software.

If you have any additional questions please feel free to reply to this
email.

Escalation from KANA On Demand Self Service Subject: Blackberry App
Message: I'm a registered Garmin Mobile for the Blackberry Storm 9350
user however the device I purchased the software for is no more. I have
upgraded to a Blackberry Torch 9850 and would like to know when the app
will be updated to support the Torch running Blackberry OS 7. I do
understand my Storm version product is not transferable to a new device
and that I will be required to purchase a new version. I would just like
to know when that will be available. Thanks.

Still at least a month away is what I'm being told. The crazy A-- thing is that BB is the only platform that does not have an integrated Navigation App. Garmin was able to program this thing more than 3 years ago, and it is infinitely better than the combination of BB Maps and Traffic. I'm purchasing the $10 TeleNav app. But it kills me that RIM still doesn't get it.

Folks, anyone know anything here? This is killing me. Waiting for GPS support for the 9810 and nada. Looked at Telenav - does not support 9810 either....

Anyone hear anything?

Default new beta BB Traffic that talks

As you may know if you are reading the Crackberry news, the BB Beta Zone has a voice version of BB Traffic in test right now. Hope it is a winner. I've used the non-voice version and its okay if you are not driving (i.e. parked).

[Dec27 update: BB Traffic is not equivalent to the Garmin app, albeit free. It does not have a map with your location indicated, only the turn list. It is voice, but not fully equivalent. So I/we still need Garmin to come out with OS7 device app versions]

BB Traffic v3 was released to AppWorld today. I've been using it since it went into Beta. Free turn by turn voice guidance. Not integrated into BB Maps though (??). Works incredibly well. Adjusts to traffic conditions. No need to look at the screen once underway.

Does anyone know if this means that Garmin is working now for BB7?

This lack of support is beginning to get really annoying. Are there any good alternatives?

BB Traffic has gotten better, so I use it when I must. It does now have voice. There is a map, though finding it is not intuitive and sometimes it does not auto-adjust to your route. Not the same smooth-simple aproach as Garmin, but better than a Garmin that does not work on 7.

One question for Garmin users, has anyone been successful in transferring it over to the new device pre OS 7 without having to pay the $80 to rebuy the app?

Garmin activation keys are all tied to the phone's PIN. Garmin will often give you a courtesy license transfer within a year of purchase for pre-OS7 devices. I upgraded to a 9810 within two months of purchasing Garmin for my 9800. I told Garmin I replaced my phone with another "9800", and they emailed a download link and activation key for my new PIN. The 9800 cod is a little wonky on OS7, but I'm not complaining.

I'm both pleased and annoyed at the prospect of Garmin coming to App World. In theory, licenses will be transferable between devices. In practice, I've had so many problems transferring BeWeather keys between devices that I don't hold a lot of hope for Garmin transferability.
