Arrow Where does the Pearl 8120 come in at?

Hi all,

New to blackberry ownership and thoroughly enjoying it so far. I have got a Pearl 8120 on Orange (UK). I am a bit confused about the model though. Is it a brand new handset, and is it available/released in USA yet? From what I can tell, Europe got it first which is a bit strange to me.

Does the 8120 superceed the 8110? And is the 8120 a better newer handset than the 8130?

Thanks!

The 8120 is fairly new, less than a few months on the market. I believe it did come to the EU first.

It does not supersede any other device, or better than the 8110 or 8130. The 8120 has different features (like WiFi, that another might not.

I think suncom is the only US carrier with the 8120 so far. T-mobile (who bought them) will likely have it soon with UMA. Here is a run down of the 81XX devices:
8100 - original Pearl
8110 - Pearl 2 - GPS - just announced, will likely go to Att
8120 - Pearl 2 - WiFi - will likely go to T-mobile for UMA
8130 - Pearl 2 - CDMA/EVDO device for Sprint and Verison, broadband data, GSM for roaming outside US

By Pearl 2 I mean the newer Pearl design, external micro SD slot, 3.5mm headphone port, 2mp camera.

Default 8130 does not support GSM

as a means of correction, the 8130 mentioned in the reply above does NOT support GSM, only CDMA/EVDO Rev.0. The only BB device - to my knowledge - on offer and supporting service on both CDMA and GSM networks is the 8830 from Verizon which only supports NON-US GSM carrier use.

Alltel also offers that model of the 8830.

8120 is out for Suncom (in the states), who is in the process of being purchased by Tmobile, it includes wifi and EDGE as the data. Unfortunately it ships with very low memory, though the setup wizard frees up 10mb.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't know much about the US network carriers, and their mobile technologies so I'll just stick to the UK knowledge! It's nice to know a bit of background about my Pearl 8120 though.

Europe and Asia always gets the cool hardware before us Americans do if we ever get it. Always been that way.

I completely disagree. I've always felt that the UK think that USA gets everything before us!
