do you have to have both devices connected at the same time?

I'm not a 100% sure but no, I think it backs up one and then you plug the other one in and it transfers everything to the new device.

Device Switch Wizard will prompt your for the first device and
do what it does. When done it will ask you for the next device.
Unplug the first one, connect the second, and you're off to the races.
