So following the BB10 port-a-thon on Twitter (using #BB10portathon)

From Jess Ariss, Developer Relations Marketing at RIM:

"4000 apps in the first 5 hours!? That's more than one app every 5 seconds. #BB10portathon"

Twitter / jesseariss: 4000 apps in the first 5 hours!? ...

    That is just nuts!

Can you find out how many cascade built BB apps being submitted??.I have 5% intrest in ported apps.Quite a few apps from other platforms are just really bland compared to cascades built for bb apps.

So when they say "Port-a-thons", there are 2 separate ones going on:

The Android one, and the Community one, which includes Cascades, Adobe Air and WebWorks. They don't break down the numbers of how many right now are which type, but I'm sure they will surface after the events are over.

And when they say port, they may not necessarily be a port - new applications can be submitted in this too!

Latest update - 16 hours in, over 8000 apps submitted so far

Twitter / BlackBerryDev: still going strong in hour ...

While there is always going to be non-quality apps present, looking at some of the tweets and pictures the developers are posting themselves, there is looking to be quite a lot of well thought out stuff!

I'm sitting in and listening on the Port-a-Thon and Kari (http://twitter.com/zehr2) just made the announcement they are over 12,000 submitted applications right now with 7 hours to go

They change the T&Cs so that they can go past the $1 million limit initially set

Does anyone know what type of apps this encompasses, i.e. ports? Android? Native? Quality vs Questionable Quality? I don't want to take anything away from what has been accomplished, but there is part of me that can't stop thinking about the barrage of book apps and "Handster" quality apps that appeared on the Playbook - to the annoyance of many Playbook users. I really don't want to see that occur with BB10.

PS - Don't take this as a criticism to what's been done, there were some really clean looking applications that were tweeted (well pictures of applications); I also am really thankful to whoever made the Colour Blindness Testing app - that will be very handy for me.

Nothing official has been release on the breakdown. As mentioned earlier, today was an Android and Community port-a-thon. Now keep in mind, it is 13,000 (yes that seems to be the final tally) apps SUBMITTED - this does not mean approved. The reviewing process will hopefully weed out the Handster-esque applications

Please read through the posts. It has been said numerous times that this was not just an Android Port-a-thon but as well as a Community one which included Cascades, Qt/QML, WebWorks, Adobe Air. I cannot stress how much port here does not mean necessarily a quick an easy port of something from another platform, but could be new applications as well

There are always going to be lots of rubbish apps, it's just the nature of the beast. The point is that there will also be some really good ones too. That amount is absolutely astonishing. It really is. It doesn't matter right now if some apps are just Android ones, there needs to be enough to make the platform viable from the off. If it succeeds and sells well, developers will be queuing up to get native apps on there. We just need to have them for now.

In which case RIM needs to purge the low-quality applications before they reach BlackBerry AppWorld. Otherwise, with thousands of applications in BlackBerry AppWorld it will be more trouble than its worth to seek out the few gems.

To an extent. But Apple supposedly only approve quality apps and there are still thousands upon thousands of rubbish ones

Pretty much, except the problem will be amplified. RIM is paying devs for literally anything they submit. Up to 20 apps at $100 = an incredibly easy 2 grand. I personally know dozens of devs who have submitted totally useless apps throughout the various port-a-thons (web launchers mostly) just to make an easy buck.

    I thought web-launchers didn't qualify for the port-a-thons?
