Lets be honest here. You can't bring up a conversation about phone popularity, the RAZR, and aging Operating Systems compared to new ones without mentioning the iPhone.
You actually brought up the iphone.......... Quote:

There will always be something newer, shinier, with more sparkles and lots of flashy marketing. It may even have a fancy new interface with neat graphics and "cool" apps. But...can you type on it? And not just "lol" and "idk" or "bff" and "w-t-f". Can you actually communicate effectively with it? If you can, great. If not and you are using it more as a gaming and web device, then you're not comparing smart phones. You're comparing a smartphone (BB) to a...uhh...whatever you want to call it.
To me, there are lot of polished turds out there. If there is a better all-around device, I'll consider it. I'm not married to RIM, and if an Android or other device is better, I'll use it. But right now, BB does everything millions of us need in a smartphone with style and sophistication. | Pretty Much

Would I like it if RIM made the os a bit more modern looking and fresh? Sure, but in the meantime, I'm not about to trade in my BB for a "polished turd" that can't efficiently get real work done.
I mean it, folks. If you want a toy that bad, just go drop a couple hundred bucks on an iPod touch.

the BB, even the new models could be better. The OS is stale as two week old
bread, internal memory is horrible, and what genius decided there was no need
to run apps from the memory card?
I recently had to evaluate devices used by the Town I work for. At
the end, we took close to 300 BlackBerrys out of service and replaced them
with one of three Nokia devices. Surprise of surprises, not one person misses
their BB, no one complains about battery pulls, etc...
I personally like BB, having 3, being here almost daily proves that, but I am
and never have been under the illusion that it is the best of the best. It's
what works best for me, but I truly understand why people would be /are
disillusioned or frustrated by it.

Some of the points you made are things I've complained about myself, especially the amazing lack of memory and inability to run apps from the card, etc. The interface is for sure stale and could definitely use improvements.
It's just this whole "what's cool" thing that annoys me. Like I said, everyone should use what works best for him or her. For most of us on here, that's BB. I'm intrigued by the looks of many of the newer UI's and hardware designs. If some of these devices perform as well as they look, I'd be tempted to switch, as long as I could type on the darn things. But *thinking* people will do it because it works best for them, not because it's perceived to be the coolest thing out there or for the "me too" effect.
You know me, AG...not much patience for the sheeple crowd.

The BB better not turn into the RAZR or it'll get smashed to bits with a hammer just like my RAZR did |

I must not be cool. I love my 8310. Does everything I want and need. I got it for email, I got email. I wanted it for a keyboard, I got a keyboard. I wanted to surf the web on the go, I can surf the web. Best part is I can do all the above anywhere from the pooper to the golf cart to camping.

I think razrs suck all together but anyway a little spicing up of the BB OSs wouldn't be bad

Bit of a newbie's viewpoint...I got my first BB this week and absolutely love it, I very much doubt I'll switch back to another brand now. I'm impressed with everything about my Curve. I've had quite a few phones over the years and have never had loyalty to any brand (except I steer clear of Nokia!) So RIM can still convert people over to their brand (like me) and make them stay.
I did notice that there was similarity between the models at my phone store but I've never found a phone so easy to use that does everything! and doesn't look like it'll fall apart which is why I'll stick with BB's from now on

Its like everything else.
After using something for a while, it does get boring or seem played out. TO SOME OF US. Some that just need the phone and want internet and email, dont really care.
I know some that switched to the IPhone and went back to bb, then I know some that went to IPhone and are bored of it now.
I think main stream users arent as into all the stuff it CAN DO, or should do, but what it DOES DO!
Everything gets played out after awhile...Your dream job, phone, and sometimes your girl! lol....

as time progresses you'll find the flaws and you'll hope BB fixes them
I love my BB, and will be moving to another BB very soon, but as mentioned above, there are some stale elements to the BB's OS and Memory limitations
the Voice Dialing is great, but once you start mixing multiple language people in the address book not being able to program the voice dial nor be able to voice dial by Nickname is irritating,
Why the limited onboard memory? seriously we have 128GB soldistate hard drives these days, and 16GB microSD cards, put atleast 1 GB of addressable memory or allow apps to run from Memory Cards,
as for the from factor always being the same, sure some people yell that it looks stale and just the same phone over and over, but from a training standpoint and business standpoint, you want that, you want to be able to KNOW where the buttons are and what they do with out having the phone in your hand, you want to KNOW that if the light is blinking Blue that blue tooth is active, or if blinking red you have a message, consistency is important in function, just like the lay out of the keyboard on computers has barely changed even though in todays world we use [esc] and [del] far more then they did when the layout was done, and CAPLOCK really it should be like a phone keyboard and be a function key, but no one will be the poineer because people want consistency and RIM knows this.
