People asking about how much apples new products will harm iPhone, whilst I've been thinking that the decision for Sony to name their (t) Z3 is going to do more damage, it's bad enough the response that you get asking about BlackBerry phones, now when you ask about Z3 they'll think you're on about something else. And people who don't know what they want might end up getting the wrong Z3.. or do I worry too much?

I don't think anyone would get this confused. If you are going in and asking about a specific phone odds are you have an idea on what the phone is and who makes it.

Yup that's why I mentioned 'people who don't know what they want' if someone recommended the 'Z3' they might think it's the Sony one not the BlackBerry one, or if they want to Google it and Sony one comes up they might not know there's a BlackBerry one too... it will all be down to which one is advertised the most widely initially

If anything it'll probably work in BlackBerry's favour. Android is infinitely more popular than BlackBerry, and the Z3 is Sony's flagship but BB's budget phone. If anyone recommends that someone buy a Z3 they're probably recommending the Sony, but maybe the person will buy the BB by accident instead :P

People who walk in not knowing what they want will be walking out with whatever the carrier jockey pushes on them (an iPhone or a Galaxy). Doubt this will really cause confusion when it's unlikely either device will be offered or even stocked.

I'd also be willing to bet that if the Z3 gets introduced to North America and Europe with LTE it will be under a new name (a la the Passport and Classic). Chen doesn't seem to be a fan of the old BB10 naming scheme.

If the North American version of the Z3 is called the Z3 LTE, then that is a fail on the part of BlackBerry. Not sure how things will shake diwn for the Z3 areas though

Only one should be using the Z3 name. This is like if Sony named the ps3 the Sony xbox 360. Microsoft re-branded xbox as playerstation 4 or LG decides to release the LG eyePhone 6. Popularity or availability in certain countries shouldn't change this. Sony is using a name that was already given to another smartphone. I don't think this will really effect BlackBerry much though.

Except your examples are all using the names of major competition, names using more than 2 characters (in a format common to the industry), and names that are TRADEMARKED. Of course Sony was going to call it the Z3, they've been working up to it with their Z1 and Z2 series, which have sold more phones by themselves than BB10 has in total, possibly a few times more.

Should they really have avoided calling their high-end phone the "Sony Xperia Z3" just because the low-end, unpredictably-named "BlackBerry Z3" was released in a few developing nations and may have sold a few hundred thousand units? If anyone confuses the two when making a purchase, they really had no idea what they wanted to begin with.
