I believe RIM is integrating the webkit in to the OS, so it will be available to more than just the browser, supporting the "super apps" motiff they are pushing. It is believed that a OS 6.0 lite is in development for devices with lower memory like the 9700, Storm, Tour, etc, the 256 devices.
Verizon reps I have spoken to think it will be available on the current BB and when it is released it will be sent to the devices to update
But who knows !

They can roll out a higher OS5.x but lower than OS6 for existing phones. The new browser will be an add on module. Everything is possible. But to get this new browser add on, existing bb phones will have to upgrade to OS5.x

It will not be a add on module. If you don't have OS6, you don't get webkit. It was confirmed in a early video that im looking for now. Someone will figure out how to put it on OS5 tho if rim does not.

That's kind of what I was thinking. They're already peeling OS6 files out to put into hybrids, whats to say they can't do that with the new browser. I mean, unless I've just completely gone off the rails...
Just to share a little information from my experience. Those hoping for a 5.0 hybrid with the webkit browser don't hold your breathe . The chances of it are very unlikely. Some of the wekbit files from os 5.2 and 6.0 can be loaded on to 5.0 but cause display issues such as pages looking completely wrong, to not being able to scroll. But once you try to load the rendering libraries you will brick your os or cause it to trigger going into safe mode. The webkit engine has a lot of dependences on other libraries with (currently) will not run on os 5.0. That coupled with APIs that are simply not part of os 5.0 base. RIM wasn't joking when they said webkit wouldn't be a standalone up date, but would have deep integration into the os, because it does.
Like I said this is my own personal experience with it. So take it for what its worth. There are people out there smarter than myself and may find something I didn't
