Will Verizon / AT&T let me swap my iphone 4 + cash for a BB10?
or will I have to sell the iphone and then buy the BB10? Please advise. Thank you.
Also is it better in the long run to buy the phone outright with no plan and then just get data etc from a MetroPCS or the like?

Just pay retail for the BB10 device and sell the iPhone4. Apple has good resale value.
