- This doesn't pertain to BB, only a laptop question, so please delete if I am not allowed to post this. I am still new to wifi and looking into getting a laptop and get rid of my desktop PC. My question is you plug the cable internet into the wireless router and it sends it wirelessly to your laptop. How far does that signal travel. If I hook it up like that, I live in an apartment complex, can my neighbors use my wifi as well or do they need some type of password to log into it?03-05-09 04:49 PM
- The signal strength, quality and distance it travels varies greatly depending on the type (G, N N+ etc.) and quality of the router. So in an apartment setting, yes your neighbors can (and will) use your wi-fi if you let them. Now, if you are just really nice and love your neighbors, you could all split the costs involved. But you will be susceptible to privacy and security issues. It's best that you lock your wi-fi with a good secure password.03-05-09 05:00 PM
- Taylor is right. You don't want neighbors or somebody in a car leeching your WiFi. If they download child porn, it's your IP the cops will be tracking down.
You would do well to setup your router with WPA security and a long, cryptic password. Then set up your laptop, wireless printer, wifi phone, etc with the same security settings. Don't use WEP, that can be cracked in 60 seconds with the right tools.

- Agreed. WEP is stupidly weak. With a simple pen testing tool it'll buckle within a few minutes. Use WPA. This means that you assign who is allowed to access it by putting their MAC (otherwise known as "physical address" into the router) so it only allows them access. This means that even if someone does crack your router key, they still won't be able to use it. It's crackable, but takes a lot more work.
Like the person a few posts above said, If you're kind and want to split the cost with those on your complex, it could work, but it is best to lock it.03-22-09 05:36 AM
