I try sending pictures to others and they do not receive them . always comes up MMS mode when I know it should be SMS mode but cannot figure out how to do this

SMS = Text only, one recipient.
MMS = Media (images and files) and text combo and/or more than one recipient.

You use MMS to send/receive pictures via text message.

One thing, if your friends are on iPhones, they will need to have their iMessage app set to NOT take over all SMS/MMS messages, or they will only be able receive SMS/MMS from other iPhone users.

Make sure your cell carrier supports MMS and it is enabled on your account.
The same goes for the recipient's cell phone account and that they have not blocked MMS.

MMS requires data from your cellular provider. They can't be sent via wifi.

When I send pics, I prefer to use BBM with an attachment (paper clip icon) because it is easy, you don't use data (via wifi) and you can see when the recipient receives and reads the message.

You could also use email with the picture as an attachment.
