    I have just had a message that Whatsapp will no longer be supported on Blackberry devices, as off Dec 2016
    Will that be the end, or can you get the app another way?

    The Android version will probably work on your BlackBerry but you will never get any new updates for WA after that date.

    Unfortunately, you're going to have to buy a Windows 10, iOS or Android phone, if you really need it. Otherwise, enjoy BlackBerry 10 if you don't care.
