BBM added *only* 40M in 1.5 months after DEBUTING access to about half a billion (or more) iOS and Android users.

WhatsApp grew 100M users after having been on the market for years and being on every platform shortly after they were released.

That's a very impressive rate of growth, and is much more impressive than what BBM did given the amount of "new users" it had access to after going cross platform.

The growth performance of BBM simply isn't even in the same stratosphere as WhatsApp at this point. Keep things in perspective.

WhatsApp's performance says they do.

Also, WhatsApp is counting active users. Not people who install the app and just uninstall it without removing their number. Those people don't count, and neither do people who have deleted the app months ago.

It's as if a lot of people in this thread intentionally make themselves unable to understand exactly what the OP or the WhatsApp company is talking about when they said they added these MAUs.

That isn't a threat dude. WhatsApp does one thing. In the next few months, BBM will offer to everyone not just messaging but audio and video and screen sharing and channels and location glimpse and whatever else they add on - exploding messages, hopefully?

People will have WhatsCrap on their phone, but unless the WhatsApp people do something huge, and quickly, BBM will be so much better that it won't matter how many downloads WhatsCrap has. The pin system is here to stay (hopefully) and is a strength. It will take a little bit longer to hit big numbers, but BBM is doing very well, and will most likely continue to do well.

At the moment, apple and Android folks only have the basic version of BBM...once the other features come can you see WhatsApp comparing?

I tried BBM, but the graphics, the UI, and overall fluidity was not there.

No landscape typing? What did they do for so many months developing the app if even basic functionality is not there?

With BBM, I got errors, undelivered messages, disappearing notifications, unchangeable picture, etc. And the battery drain was awful.

I don't know how much the app has improved since then, but, though delayed, it was definitely a rushed launch.

Edit: Oh, and the fake reviews made me cringe, though, knowing BBRY, I shouldn't have been surprised.

The flaw there... is that even if you block a person all you want from the IM client... they still have your phone number to bug you via SMS or actual phone calls.

Maybe a solution would be following:
1. BBM accesses users phone number and contacts.
2. Users can see who has BBM installed.
3. Users invite contacts by PIN.

My opinion is that this solution would be best of both worlds. You could immediately see who from your contacts is using BBM but invite and connect only to those who you really want to message. And for those who are concerned about anything with this solution, just refuse access to your phone number and contacts.

I'm repeating my earlier post so that You understand that with this option only people who already have your number can see that You use BBM and You don't need to connect with them. You would still be able to invite people by PIN without giving them your number.

It's simply best of both worlds.

Going back to the PIN system vs. Numbers. Most IM services allow using phone numbers for contact adding. Google's system auto links verified numbers through Hangouts to Google Accounts. iMessage uses Phone Numbers from Apple Devices (Apple ID otherwise). Samsung ChatOn can use automatic Phone Matching (Samsung Account otherwise). A bunch of other IM clients can use Phone Numbers. By using a PIN/ID and not allowing the automatic linking, BBM positions that part of its service in the same league as service like Skype. People do not like dealing with PINs and IDs because they are hard to remember and often cryptic/make no sense (as BBM PINs are). They like the convenience of the Phone Number matching, because they use WhatsApp as a replacement for SMS.

If you SMS/MMS someone, you cannot avoid giving them your phone number so the linking in WhatsApp doesn't bother these people at all. Trying to invent facts based on what you personally perceive to be a disadvantage simply doesn't work. WhatsApp designed its product to work as seamlessly as the default SMS/MMS app on your phone, which can send messages to anyone on your contacts list.

If you don't want someone to see you on WhatsApp, or contact you there... Block them. It's NOT difficult, at all.

But I did not leave my BBM PIN with the school. That's my point. The school has our address and phone numbers so your point about bus drivers or any school staff sex texting or good forbid enter or place is ridiculous.

In this specific case, it's handy to you but if I had the school of my kids hand out my phone number I'd be pretty pissed. Now that bus driver has your home address and cell number saved beyond their term as a driver and there's nothing you can do about it. What if you want to add a social update saying you're at dinner with your sig other, or a family outing or any other number of scenarios. That driver, essentially a stranger, knows. Odds are it won't be a problem but I don't like playing odds when it comes to kids.

Now, coming in a not so distant future release of BBM, is the location feature. The driver could have your BBM pin (which you can revoke at any time), set a timer on their location, and you can track the bus via your maps app. They can broadcast that message to all the parents on the route once and it would make your life easier as you see from early on where they are, and they only have to send it once as opposed to the 60 times they have to send a message each morning.
