I can recieve emails and bbms regardless of this icon being there.. can some explain its significance to me... its not there all the time though...

It means you are connected to BIS servers. Same thing is indicated by an all capital "EDGE" icon.

Its there even if EDGE is there, Sometimes its not there still get all the mails, IM's, BBMs...
