A pin is for the blackberry messanger. Its what allows you to add the other person as a contact.

BBM :) BlackBerry Msgr! It allows you to add & chat with other BlackBerry users.... FREE :D it's fun, lol ;)
As said above a PIN can be used for BlackBerry Messenger to chat. It can also be used for peer-to-peer messages. It's like emails, but instead of using a regular email address you enter the PIN and it goes directly to the other BlackBerry... no mail servers involved so it's faster.
