I think people are probably reading too much into the numbering when this model is clearly going to be aimed at being an upgrade to the 9320 where BB cannot currently fit a bb10 model.

The choice of a 9720 model number rather than a 93xx might simply be because it is a combination of 9320 which it will replace and the 9790 which is the closest model as far as the specs are concerned.

So it will be packaged as a curve model? My concern isn't with it being a curve or bold 97xx. The concern is that BlackBerry is attempting to keep those who enjoy the legacy devices happy, but may miss the mark in not going with the Bold 9xxx design. Then, the complaint will be that the device should have been a bold...

The device is clearly intended to be an upgrade at the lowest end of the BB range where the 9320 currently is and is not meant to be some kind of savior for those who want a higher end model but refuse to move onto bb10, there are more than enough companies out there for BB to compete with without them wasting resources on doing it themselves.
