What Does This Mean For BlackBerry10 Camera?
Nokia announced that they will be acquiring scalado in the third qtr could this mean blackberry has to drop that image rewind feature we saw in May? One thing for sure is I hope this doesn't cause any delays.
Nokia to acquire developers, technologies and intellectual property for imaging from Scalado » Nokia – PressAcquisition aimed at enhancing imaging experiences for Nokia Lumia devices
Espoo, Finland and Lund, Sweden: Nokia is announcing plans to acquire world-class imaging specialists as well as all technologies and intellectual property from Scalado AB.
"Nokia has been working with Scalado for more than ten years and they've contributed to many of our leading imaging applications," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Smart Devices at Nokia. "This transaction would enable us to combine our leadership in camera devices with their expertise in imaging, helping people move beyond taking pictures to capturing moments and emotions and then reliving them in many different ways."
The Lund site is planned to become a key site for Nokia's imaging software for smartphones, in addition to Nokia's existing locations in Espoo and Tampere, Finland.
"This is a great opportunity for many of our people to show their leadership in imaging and to continue to build its future," said Håkan Persson, chief executive officer of Scalado AB. "Doing this as part of Nokia, already a leader in mobile imaging, will reinforce the strength of the technologies and competences developed at Scalado. We are very excited about this opportunity, which is a natural next step in our longstanding relationship with Nokia."
The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close during the third quarter of 2012. The terms of the transaction are confidential. - 06-14-2012, 04:31 AM #2
Means nothing, Samsung makes a lot of parts for Apple, Docs2Go still makes apps for Apple and Android even though Rim bought them, I'm sure TAT still works with Android and Apple etc etc, who owns them doesn't matter in the next few years.

Nokia to acquire IP and tech from Scalado
Already being discussed here. - 06-14-2012, 06:37 AM #4
It means that they already licensed the technology, and that they can use it. Nokia will keep any new developments to themselves.

I'm pretty sure RIM would have all it's licenses in place before demoing the feature. The purchase won't mean anything until renewal time.

That's probably not true, the part about Nokia keeping new developments to themselves. Nokia is in the business of making money. Right now they are struggling to do that, and buying up a tech company that is making licensing money, and then killing off those licenses wouldn't be a good business decision. A company like Apple and/or Google could do that because they sweat money, but Nokia doesn't anymore. They need all the revenue streams they can find, and if it happens to be from RIM, then thats a good thing for Nokia.
In fact, I bet Nokia would love to license this tech out to Google and Apple if they could.www.gbv.asia

I wouldn't worry terribly about it. This is basically excellent hardware utilized camera software. Another company that specializes in camera software will pop up if not available already and will likely provide a good if not better alternative, if Scalado cannot provide in the future.
RIM has this base covered for BB10 and that's all that matters.
