Lack of updates for OS7? Just three weeks ago, .825 got released by Vodafone DE. Just last week the first .861 hit the scene, even though this one is either for the 9930 or english only.
From what I remember, there is a new Facebook version in Beta Zone, as well as a new App World available for testing. I also read about a newer version for that Blackberry Navigator app. So there is still stuff going on. In terms of OS updates themselves, of course we'll see fewer ones. OS7.x is out since late 2011, all devices have seen quite some updates, first from 7.0 to 7.1, now 7.1 also has evolved quite a bit. Of course future updates will slow down now, you'll simply hit a point where you can't really optimize much more. In terms of core apps, Blackberry always wasn't the fastest with delivering a huge number of updates.
Still waiting for the OS6 update...
OS 7 who?
Tim
OS7 will be around for a while yet. Updates will be pushed when needed, but that will be bug fixes and unlikely to add new features.
Sooner or later there will be an EOL statement similar to what many other companies use. "You can use it, but we bear no responsibility or will we provide any support for it". And I'll estimate it will be around January of 2015. By then, most of the carriers will have stopped issuing re-builts and forcing upgrades to newer devices.
OS6 here too. Gonna leapfrog OS7 though. ;)
Are they going to be any new devices with OS 7? My TELCO said he has seen a roadmap for new OS 7 devices. I thought they would have stopped production now BB10 has landed.
I'd like to run BlackBerry 10 on my 8310 too, but it isn't going to happen
I also heard there will be new devices with the classic BBOS, I even think Thorsten Heins stated that in some interview. OS7 is still a critical point in Blackberries strategy, however it will mostly cover the lower end market instead of high- or mid-end.
A replacement for the 9320 would seem to make sense for this year as there is obviously no way that the prices of bb10 handsets will get down to that price-point this year, but even then, there is no certainty that it would result in updates to os7 for any other devices because carriers simply would not want to put them through testing in order to approve it and the main updates that current os7 users will see will be in the form of updated apps like bbm, fb, twitter etc. rather than wholesale os updates.
I remember reading an article a while ago saying how BlackBerry (then RIM) would still be supporting BB7 even after BB10 comes out. I forget how long, but it was a somewhat substantial amount of time. Probably doesn't help much! But like others have said, there have been updates recently so I wouldn't worry too much.
Yeah saw that too. TH interview stating that BB7 would still be active and warrants continued support.
Don't be concerned. From the earnings call...
BlackBerry OS 7 devices will continue to be supported through the transition to BlackBerry 10 | CrackBerry.comSo just to be very clear, we will not just kind of stop BB7 from being supported. We have a significant R&D team working and continuing to work on BB7. And you just saw us innovating on BB7 as well when we announced the BBM voice capability. So we will maintain BB7. There is a strong success with BB7 devices in the Asia Pac markets. And as you can see on the devices that were launching with BB10, you can probably get an idea of in which price points they fit.
So no, we will support those on-boarding, entry-level smartphone markets. We will continue to support them with BlackBerry 7, and you might expect us to even build one of the other new products based on BlackBerry 7. Because for those messaging-oriented markets, its an exciting platform and its a really perfect platform.
I'd love to see a new BB7 device. I'm not thrilled about the new touch-only interface. I can zip between apps faster having my thumb in one spot over the menu button/trackpad.
You are not going to see a "new BB7 device". But the already announced Q10 is not "touch only". It has a full physical QWERTY keyboard.
Actually there will be at least another OS7 device. People buy them for a reason.
Posted using CrackBerry App on BB10
Fwiw, BBRY told my companies IT department that current handsets and enterprise servers would be supported by them for another 12-18 months.
I imagine it would be a curve, but this time Blackberry will try to strike a really good balance between hardware, cost, and features.
Thanks for all the comments and I realise there have been some updates, but they have slowed down and hardly ever get mentioned on any of the blackberry sites. As for blackberry promises after the PlayBook , I can't really believe anything they say as I'm sure they could have been more upfront and honest about the bb10 update and sooner. Before anyone jumps on my back, I love the PlayBook but the lack of support for apps such as Skype are, I believe, a major screw up by blackberry and should have been resolved when the PlayBook was released.
Verizon just released a new OS for the Bold 9930.
