Exactly my thinking. Not to mention the build on the Z30 in my opinion was much better too.

The screen size for the Z10 was considered on the larger side for average users at the time.
The market for large phones was tiny, if at all there, when the Z10 launched. It was still small when the Z30 launched.
The Z30 would have bombed even more then the Z10 purely for being larger then normal and BB10 would have been in an even worse shape.

The S3 was already 4.7" at that point. The Z30 is the same size, but has a bigger screen. The only phones not nearing 5" screens at that point were apple devices.

The z30 has a 5 inch screen but is much bigger due to the bezels.
Just like despite the z10 having a 4.2 inch screen it is still bigger than the motor x which had a 4.6 screen. Noticeably bigger.
The z30 was seen as a phablet and even a lot of bb10 fans, myself included, would rather have a smaller phone.
Of course by today's standard the z30 is a standard size but definitely not at that time

I could be wrong, but I thought the Z30 was supposed to go up against the S4, which was definitely bigger than the 3

From my memory there was very little difference between the S3 and S4. You could barely tell them apart side by side. It was slightly bigger yeah.
But bear in mind the S4 and S5 saw Samsung start to lose sales as well

The S4 had a 5" screen, just like the z30, and also came out a little after the z10. Plus the Galaxy Note was out at the time of the z10, so a phone the size of a z30 still wouldn't have been one of the largest
