    Watch Dox Security Features Explained

Many of you have noticed Blackberry’s recent acquisition of the document DRM solution company Watch Dox. While most of you lightly understand what the company does, most of us don’t really know exactly how it works. With that being said I took the liberty to go through the company’s website to see how they protect documents and how that technology is implemented onto mobile.

After reviewing some of the product videos I want to note that Watch Dox, is currently an Enterprise offering. Meaning that this product was developed for companies that want to be able to keep track of their documents. With that being said they provide a month to month subscription of the service through the website, very similar to BES 12 offerings on Blackberry’s website. Keep that in mind.

Watch Dox has an online, desktop, and mobile applications (IOS and Android) available at this time. Allowing customers the ability to view their protected content on a variety of devices. The way that they protect their documents includes encrypting the document itself and managing the documents via the Watch Dox software. The software allows you to track the documents, which devices they were opened in, and who opened it. It also allows you to revoke the privileges and how the documents are viewed. This is best explained in Watch Dox’s Security Video that will be embedded below. One of the questions that was asked during the Berry Flow podcast was “will they protect the devices from Screen shots?” And it appears that Watch Dox does have a solution for that, such as only being able to view parts of the documents at a time to discourage people from copy the document completely. You would have to hover you mouse over the document in order to view portions of the document. They also have the ability to watermark the document remotely meaning that if an employee decides to send the document out their IP address and device identifies would be watermarked making them personally responsible for the leak.

There are many other features that could be easily explained within the video such as their ability to find documents within the company to create policy rules, so that if you are now implementing the new software, it would only take a few clicks to remotely enforce these documents.

What do you think of this acquisition? Do these videos help you understand Blackberry’s acquisition? If you are a potential BES 12 customer, would this sweeten the pot? Please leave your comments below.

Very interested in this product for the Enterprise I'm a BESAdmin for, especially the protective marking, tracking and mobility functions.

Great to see BlackBerry run with the ball on this. Thanks for putting the info together.
