Can I make +receive calls on an airplane using the WiFi on board w/Blackberry. I can use internet w/a computer in first class on those long Trans-Atlantic flights. I am sure the emails or texts would go through but can calls be made?
Depends on if the airline wifi service is blocking internet calling websites like Skype. My understanding is that they do block Skype, but I never actually researched it. I just remember it mentioned in some of the blogs I read.

Yep, exactly. I am going to China in November with my new UMA enabled phone and I really really hope they have Wi-Fi on the flight. It'll help pass the time.
NO. NO not at all. It has a data connection like every other blackberry, but it is a CDMA device and for verizon... Verizon does not offer a blackberry with WIFI yet. I've owned several 8330's and I'd be buggered if they had wifi...
the WIFI on delta supports UMA. its too slow to hold a conversation, but the phone can dial out on UMA and I could hear my friend using a t-mobile 8320 for about a second before it faded to static.
UMA would be the only way this would work, so either using UMA through Rogers or T-Mobile. AT&T, even though they have WifiBerrys, doesn't support UMA, but you could still use WiFi for other things.
Since there aren't any CDMA Berrys out yet that support WiFi (until the Storm 2 or Essex arrive), you can't use VZW, Sprint, USCC, or any other CDMA carrier while in flight - radio has to be turned off.
