upgrading bb os?
So when you update your bb's os, do u have to wipe out all of the applications? I was about to update mine when I saw in the options popup of DM 4.5 that I had to erase applications and application data. This was also in the update section of application loader, not the add/remove section. Also, after the upgrade of os, does the backup then restore the old apps onto ur bb?

You will need to do a backup on your computer this way you will have everything. If your messing with something beta I wouldn't recommend it. Can have plenty of bugs in it. But yes it should still have your old applications. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone. Hope I could help

1. Download and install to PC the Desktop Manager
2. Download the new OS you want and install it to the PC
3. Open Desktop Manager and do a complete backup of your current device.
4. Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
5. Plug in BB and open Desktop Manager
6. Select Application Loader
7. You will be prompted to upgrade
Beta .52 has been working great! Seems like its very close for a official release. If all fails and you don't like it, its easy to revert back.
edit: It may take 45 mins or so to upgrade. Also upon device reboot, it may take 10-20 minutes for the initial reboot. - 07-10-2008, 07:41 PM #4

WHOA!. 1st, you do NOT have to wipe your phone. 2, you can back-up your third party applications by themselves. 3, when you upgrade; the DM saves apps, then erases them, then restores them. 4, DO NOT try to restore your Berry on a back-up with a older version OS.

Using betas are not that bad. I've used all of them. Just back up your applications. Anything happens, just reinstall the original software from the "carrier". I've never wiped mine in the last five - six months of using betas.
Instructions for updating your BlackBerry OS
- Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager 4.5 installed.
- Download the latest OS for your BlackBerry model to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
- Go to \Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader and DELETE the Vendor.xml file.
- Plug in your BlackBerry via USB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade. Follow the prompts and you're on your way.
Be patient, it can take more than an hour... Mine took about 50 mins.
If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, re-connect to Desktop Manager again and run the application loader and it should load the OS to the device. From the head MOFO in charge:

If you are new to Blackberry, I wouldn't suggest upgrading to a beta OS. However, this statement is mis-leading. Does the OS have bugs? A few. Are they major? No. If they were, you would NOT see atleast 75% of this community running beta releases. If they were as described, the word would be out. GL. and post if you have any more concerns.

Well, her statment is not as bad as a member of another forum telling ppl that using the betas could possibly have RIM knocking at your door and/or upsetting the natural order of things (it's a d*mn berry). RIM is welcome at my house, anytime. Just bring me a BOLD, a bottle, and wipe your feet at the door. Wife doesn't play that ish
