    Now the story;

    Put my Passport in for screen lift repair and inquired about unlocking my Z 10 while in the store. I was told to contact customer service which I did.

    I protested the $50.00 unlocking fee but it was getting to be a losing battle so I consented to the charge and provided the IMEI I believe it's called and received the above posted email.

    Now for the questions;

    I always thought the unlocking code was device specific but am I wrong about that? Or is it SIM card specific?

    Since my argument concerning waiving the fee had to do with traveling to the Caribbean and having to use my secondary device while the Passport was being repaired, is this just a case of customer service providing a little more value to me?

    I do not have any Nokia phones but do have a LG G3 (wife's) so if I pop my SIM in her phone can I unlock it also?

    The unlocking of the Z10 was successful on the first attempt using the code provided for the Q 10.

    Last question, am I dreaming?

    Cell phone locking is carrier and device specific, so a Rogers Z10 will require a different unlocking code from a Telus Z10. You can get an unlocking code from Canada GSM for less than $50.

    You don't need a SIM card installed to unlock a phone. A branded phone is locked to that carrier regardless of whether there is a sim installed or not.

    Make sure you follow the "BlackBerry 10" instructions for Z10 or Passport, not the older BBOS "BlackBerry" instructions.

    They have still sent me the unlocking code for the Q10 which worked by the way but I assume the other codes were a bonus?

    I guess so. I'm surprise the Q10 code worked for the Z10. I assumed that's why you have to provide both the carrier name and IMEI number when using a third party. Maybe it works differently going through the carrier, so having their sim installed could be part of the process.

    What surprises me is that all the unlocking codes seem to be the same at some point. So now I just wonder if the code is carrier account specific.

    If not I've just provided everyone on a Rogers plan with free unlocking!?

    They must be using the Rogers app on your phone to set this up specific to your account.
    The procedure describe here is different from what I have used with third party unlocking codes.

    I just followed the instructions as provided for the Q10 and it worked for the Z10. It's just that now I'm confused about the whole unlocking process and wonder if it just a carrier money grab.
