When I disassembled mine for the first time, the aggregate dust and lint ball was the size of a pencil eraser.

Take out chrome ring. Then, take out trackball assembly and blow dust off trackball, as well as blow dust out of housing. Turn off device, re-install trackball and ring, then roll the living crap out of it for about 30 seconds...up, down, left, right, diagonal. Push down on trackball and roll it as well. Should be good to go after that.
