I saw a bunch of scattered posts about the fact that GPS is not recognized by most 3rd party apps. Thought I would collect them here. I think this is a GIANT problem (note that the word giant is in all caps) and I think that we should all be contacting the various manufacturers. Its a software problem.

As far as googlemaps goes, let me clarify what I mean by "does not work" since there is some confusion. There are two ways that some apps will find your location: 1) by cell phone tower and 2) by using the phones gps receiver.

Method 1 will find you within a couple hundred meters (why googlemaps is on the metric system wtf knows). Method 2 will pinpoint your location. Method 2 is what does not work.

Poynt relies on googlemaps so they have asked that we all contact google, or RIM (since RIM can lean on Google).

Of course, why it's up to the consumer to help fix the software, once again, who the **** knows.

Is this only applicable to Sprint? I have a Verizon tour and have no problems with Google maps or Trapster (once I set it up properly)

Have not tried Trapster but Google Maps works fine with the GPS on my Verizon Tour and pinpoints location down to 3-5 meters most of the time.

For Trapster (VZW): Make sure the "assisted GPS" option is set to "OFF" instead of "default." (NOTE: the OS GPS menu needs to be set up as described below) Mine works fine now.

Google Maps: As long as your GPS (Options; Advanced Options; GPS) is set as follows:
    GPS Data Source: "Device GPS"
    GPS Services: "Location On"
    Location Aiding: "Enabled,"
it should work. Mine dose on VZW, anyway.

    Hope this helps.

Here's directions to get it to work, right off the Trapster website: Go into Trapster > Settings > GPS and set "allow assisted GPS" to "no". Then try restarting Trapster, and going to a place where you have a clear view of the sky

Here's a question though: Do you leave this app open all the time? And just running the background?

    Yet a different story -

Bought a Verizon Tour about a week ago (late July, 09). BB maps, Amaze, AND Google maps all worked perfectly with GPS, Live Search didn't work.

Then, being unable to leave well enough alone, I upgraded the device OS to 4.7.1.40. None of the apps worked with internal GPS. All settings were correct as discussed here. Then did battery pull. Now Amaze and BB maps work but Google has quit seeing the GPS and Live Search is still dead.

I'm not sure what to try next but will wait a few weeks until back from vacation before the urge to leave well enough alone strikes again. As long as one of the apps will give me satellite maps (Amaze), I'm good enough to go....

    Any ideas for next step?
