Topographic Maps & GPS on your BlackBerry - Without Internet Connection
- If you are living in Oslo, Hamburg, Chicago, Brooklyn, London Area, or Hong Kong you can use the free beta version of TopoExplorer for BlackBerry.
It seems to be a very early beta version which actually just plots your GPS location onto a map. The maps that are delivered for free with the beta version are topographic maps. Some of them are even older Russian (must be secret soviet government stuff) ones. The following maps (with their scales) are included:
- Oslo Region (1:200.000 Map)
- Hamburg Region (1:500.000 Map)
- Chicago (1:24.000)
- Brooklyn (1:24.000)
- London Area (1:500.000)
- Hong Kong (1:200.000)
So this application just makes sense for people living at those areas - at least at the moment. It is said that the final version will support
- 1:24.000 Maps for the whole US
- 1:50.000 - 1:1000.000 Maps for the whole World
Here is a screen shot:
I have tested the application on a camping trip to some outskirt areas and it worked fine. Though it is a beta version I did not find any bug. Well, some more features would be nice but it is still a beta version

- Scrolling is done with the trackball. It works pretty smooth and quite quick - at least on my Curve 8320. I use it in conjunction with a Holux GR-231 Bluetooth GPS receiver by the way. There is only an issue if I load big maps into the program and try to scroll very fast. Then the scrolling hangs a bit.
I heard from the developer that there are going to do some work on the scrolling performance. Although I think it is quite good by now.12-04-08 06:22 AMLike 0 - Scrolling is done with the trackball.
